A Hunt for Easter Candy and Wine Pairings

Happy Reese’s Egg, Peeps, and chocolate bunny season, aka Spring. Yes, Easter is a time for celebration and family, but you know what else is everywhere around Easter? Candy. From children running around searching for eggs, to adults putting together Easter baskets, to those who aren’t celebrating but are on the lookout for post-holiday sales, there are loads of people throwing eggs and bunnies and chicks into their carts this time of year. And for adults hiding eggs at 2 am or those just in it for the sweets, we have some Easter candy and wine pairings for you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ REESE’S EGGS Arguably better tasting than a regular Reese’s cup, these chocolate eggs are an Easter basket staple. How would you feel if we started off our wine and candy pairing, not with wine but a spirit? Hopefully, you don’t mind because that is exactly what we’re doing. Peanut butter and chocolate? What could pair better with that than whiskey? If you find something that does, let us know. But for now, grab yourself your favorite whiskey / whisky and enjoy. PEEPS A controversial candy. You either love them or you hate them. If you hate them, just drink the wine we chose to go with them. If you love them, you’re in for a sweetness overload. That’s right, if you’re going to go headfirst into a sugar rush, you might as well drink Sauternes while you’re at it. Plus, that golden color? A perfect match for those golden eggs. CHOCOLATE BUNNY Okay, this pairing is a little calmer compared to the last. This one is a classic. For those who like reliable options. Just make sure that if you bite off the bunny’s ear, you have a backup bunny or are a good enough storyteller to explain to your kids the next day. So, what should we pair here? Grab a glass of Napa Cabernet Sauvignon . CADBURY MINI EGGS These little candies are perfect to put in Easter eggs or use to decorate Easter cookies/treats. What goes best with a milk chocolate center and a hard candy shell? Auslese Riesling is our pick. Why? Because it is a sweet wine that is a bit zingy at first and then sweet and creamy, just like biting into a mini egg. JELLY BEANS Another great candy to throw inside Easter eggs. There are so many flavors within a handful of Jelly Beans, so what wine pairs best? We’re thinking Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc . A wine with nice acidity is perfect to balance out the various flavors you get with Jelly Beans. Just don’t get the gross-flavored ones; no pairing can save you from those.

Dog Point Vineyard

Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Dog Point Vineyard combines experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland & James and Wendy Healy. Ivan and James met while working at Cloudy Bay Vineyards. Light straw with typical SB aromas with some floral mineral notes. On the palate flavors of melon and grapefruit citrus with honeysuckle notes, lively acidity, nice mouthfeel with long finish ending with a salty spice character. Exceptional wine! Drink ‘19 now! — a year ago

Vouette et Sorbée

Blanc d'Argile Extra Brut Champagne Chardonnay 2011

Had a slightly oxidative note of bitter almond suffused with nougat and brioche. Some green and red apple notes, and a bit of peach as it opened but it was definitely saline and oyster-shell and zingy. A really nice nose that seemed as half Chablis, half Champagne. Taut, lacking some of the mid palate weight, and precise to a fault, this was almost too much to drink on its own and a better food wine (unfortunately, we had an early pizza dinner with the kids, opened the bottle after, and all I’ve been eating is Cadbury Mini-Eggs for the last hour). — 6 years ago

Corison

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Friday wine. This was a easy choice for National Women’s History month. An iconic winemaker. A true trailblazer. Exceptional wines. An endless amount of superlatives that can go with Cathy Corison. Her wines are described as having both elegance and power.

2013 Corison Cabernet was perfection in my glass last night. Winemaker notes describe the wine as having aromas and flavors tend toward the dark end of the Cabernet fruit spectrum with blueberries, black cherries, blackberries and dark plums all singing in close harmony. Complexing notes include tobacco, baking spices, chocolate, and savory herbs including sage, thyme and basil. Floral notes of violets and rose petals play with a notable stony minerality in the aromas and long finish. 13.5%ABV. I described this wine as being both elegant and stunning.

Grateful for the women who busted through those glass ceilings. Grateful for the trailblazers.

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1979

This wine came wearing a fur stole fastened with a gemstone button, thereby making it the fanciest bottle of wine I'd ever seen. It was an engagement present intended to be opened at a special time, but instead we drank it immediately over takeout pasta and Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs. I'm not sorry. The wine was delicious. Transcendent. Drinking it was the occasion. — 9 years ago
