Welcome to this week's Must-Try Wines from Vinous! Each week we compile a list of wines from the Vinous database that you need to add to your wine wish list. With all the various regions, producers, and grapes, no week will be the same! All of the wines listed in this feature are available for purchase on Banquet . This week's must-try wines are from Antonio Galloni’s article, 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence . Enjoy his notes for this week's must-try below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “Grace, elegance and understatement are some of the qualities readers will find in the 2020 Barolos. The best wines are undeniably striking. That said, the vintage is not an unqualified success, as the growing season presented its fair share of challenges. Overall, 2020 is a vintage of mid-weight Barolos. These are wines to admire for their balance and seductive appeal more than their power or structure.” --Antonio Galloni, 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence, January 2024 1. 2019 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo 2. 2019 Brovia Barolo 3. 2019 Cascina Fontana Barolo 4. 2019 Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Gramolere 5. 2019 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta 6. 2021 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia 7. 2021 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta 8. 2020 Nervi-Conterno Gattinara 9. 2019 Paolo Scavino Barolo Monvigliero 10. 2021 Vietti Timorasso

Vietti

Derthona Colli Tortonesi Timorasso 2021

Delectable Wine
9.2

Vietti's 2021 Timorasso is gorgeous. The first vintages here were decidedly rustic, but the 2021 shows an added level of textural finesse that is especially apparent in its contours. Hints of lemon peel, white flowers, mint and chamomile all grace this layered, super expressive white. The 2021 was fermented mostly in ceramic and steel, with just one lot done in wood. I have never been the biggest fan of the Vietti Timorasso, but the 2021 might make me change my mind. It's a gorgeous wine in every way. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Cerretta Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2019 Barolo Cerretta has shut down considerably since I last tasted it, but the elements are also more put together in that the wine is a harmonious whole rather than a combination of individual components. Dark red fruit, rose petal, orange peel, spice and dried herbs are beautifully sketched. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Azienda Agricola Brovia

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2019 Barolo is a terrific entry-level offering. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, menthol, licorice and spice open in the bouquet. The 2019 is quite expressive aromatically, which makes it tempting to drink, although it is quite potent on the palate. The 2019 is a fine choice for consuming over the next decade or so, but I would give it a healthy decant first. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Paolo Scavino

Monvigliero Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2019 Barolo Monvigliero is a gorgeous wine that marries the classicism of this site with the bright, forward fruit that is such a signature of the Scavino style. Freshly-cut roses, kirsch, mint, cinnamon and blood orange race across the palate, supported by vibrant acids and veins of sinewy tannin. This seems to call for at least a few years in bottle. Vigna Francia Barbera d'Alba 2021

Delectable Wine
9.5

Rich and explosive from the get-go, all the elements of the 2021 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia are massively dialed up. Black cherry, plum, incense, licorice, mocha and sage all rush from the glass. Dynamic and vibrant to the core, the 2021 is seriously impressive. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Cascina Fontana

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2019 Barolo is absolutely gorgeous. Bright and lifted, with striking inner perfume, the 2019 is an absolute charmer. Rose petal, blood orange, mint, spice and new leather develop with a bit of time in the glass, adding to the wine's charm and sensuality. The 2019 is delicate and alluring. It's everything Barolo should be, especially at this level. Best of all, the 2019 should be a fabulous value in the world of Barolo. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Azienda Vitivinicola Nervi

Conterno Gattinara Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2020 Gattinara is elegant and lifted. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon and orange peel grace this ethereal, nuanced Gattinara. Bright saline notes and sweet red-toned fruit build into the long, persistent finish. Understated and silky, the 2020 is exquisite. All this needs is a few years to soften. Vigna Cerretta Barbera d'Alba 2021

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2021 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Cerretta is bright, focused and nervy. Blood orange, red cherry fruit, spice and mint all race across the palate. There's tremendous energy and tension running through the 2021. Vibrant saline notes round out the finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Fratelli Alessandria

Gramolere Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.4

From barrel I thought the 2019 Barolo Gramolere was quite elegant, but now it’s anything but. At this stage, it is a searingly tannic and forbidding Barolo, with notes of black cherry, plum, leather, licorice and mocha. The 2019 has shut down massively post-bottling. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)

Cantina Bartolo Mascarello

Barolo Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.6

The 2019 Barolo is a potent, layered wine, within the super-classic style that is the house signature. Dark cherry, plum, spice, leather, licorice and menthol add to an impression of brooding intensity. There's real weight and substance here that needs time to emerge. Dried herbs, sage, mint, tobacco and cedar linger on the vibrant, tense finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2024)
