Enjoy his notes for this week's must-try below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “Alto Piemonte remains one of the most glorious, under the radar regions in the world. Wines of delicacy and transparency communicate the essence of site in the handful of villages that comprise this series of small appellations in Northern Italy. Many estates featured in this report are quite small, making some bottles hard to find. Nevertheless, consumers and professionals seeking fine, artisan wines of place that can diversify any cellar will find so much to admire in Alto Piemonte today.” --Alto Piemonte: Small Is Beautiful, Antonio Galloni, February 2024 1. 2019 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Bianca 2. 2019 Ferrando Carema Etichetta Nera 3. 2020 Nervi-Conterno Gattinara 4. 2019 Sorpasso Carema 5. 2018 Tiziano Mazzoni Ghemme Ai Livelli 6. 2019 Tiziano Mazzoni Ghemme Dei Mazzoni

Tiziano Mazzoni

Ghemme dei Mazzoni Red Blend 2019

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2019 Ghemme Dei Mazzoni is gracious and delicate, especially within the context of the appellation. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and orange peel build effortlessly. This silky, mid-weight Ghemme is vivid and super inviting. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2024)

Azienda Vitivinicola Nervi

Conterno Gattinara Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2020 Gattinara is elegant and lifted. Crushed red berry fruit, cinnamon and orange peel grace this ethereal, nuanced Gattinara. Bright saline notes and sweet red-toned fruit build into the long, persistent finish. Understated and silky, the 2020 is exquisite. All this needs is a few years to soften. Tiziano Mazzoni

Ghemme ai Livelli Nebbiolo 2018

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2018 Ghemme Ai Livelli is a dense, potent wine. Black cherry, spice, leather, menthol, game and incense add to an impression of brooding intensity. This rustic, burly Ghemme offers tons of punch and character, but it is marked by slightly elevated alcohol, searing tannins and oxidative overtones. In spite of that, it’s still a very good wine, which just shows the potential here. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2024)

Ferrando Vini

Etichetta Bianca (White Label) Carema Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2019 Carema Etichetta Bianca is laced with sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers, crushed rocks and Alpine herbs. This is an especially floral, savory vintage for the Etichetta Bianca, a wine that impresses with its energy, verve and class. The only thing missing here is a bit of freshness and depth. Sorpasso

Carema Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.5

The 2019 Carema is a gorgeous, deep wine. It is also incredibly young to the point that the aromatics are quite closed. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, crushed rocks, rose petal and cinnamon struggle to emerge. There's plenty of intensity, especially for Carema, but readers will have to be patient. The 2019 needs a ton of time. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2024)

Luigi Ferrando

Etichetta Nera Carema Nebbiolo 2019

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2019 Carema Etichetta Nera is a bit darker and richer than the White Label, as it often is. Black cherry, plum, leather, menthol, licorice and dried herbs are nicely pushed forward. Overall, this is a relatively mid-weight vintage for the Black Label, but it has better energy and a very long finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2024)
