Generally one of the best Cabernets in Margaret River and therefore Australia. Very dark Ruby in colour. Cassis and blackberry, ripe and rich. I would never pick this as Margaret River in a blind tasting. Where are the herbal notes? But still recognisable as a quality Cabernet. The 2009 Moss Wood was given a poor score of only 84 points by Huon Hooke who is one of Australia’s leading wine scribes. He said “over ripe fruit is the problem “. I have always rated Huon’s reviews and have been a long time subscriber to his website and always will be but I don’t believe he got this right. On 4th July 2012 he said “I can’t see this ageing well” and gave a drinking window of 2012 to 2018. Well tonight at 15 years of age it is drinking very well. James Halliday gave the wine 95 points.

A controversial wine for Moss Wood, one of the icons of Margaret River. See previous notes - better than the 87 points I gave it 7 years ago in 2014. Ripe blackberry and cassis / lovely perfume. Sweeter, riper and more “South Australian “ than the normal Margaret River Cabernet and the traditional herbaceousness. This was a better showing.

Normally one of my favourite Aussie Cabernets but as recorded elsewhere on Delectable the 2009 is a little too rich and ripe foresaking the trademark Herbaceousness.

2009 vintage - without doubt, the most disappointing and underwhelming Moss Wood I have had - glad I have only one more 750ml - not sure what to do with the magnum, though this wine has nowhere to go!

I would not normally drink a Moss Wood Cabernet under 10 years of age, but I was alerted to a problem with the 2009 and tried my first of 6 bottles tonight, and a problem there is. Let me say that over 3 decades since the 1982, MW has been my favourite Aussie Cabernet (1990, 91, 95, 96 and 2001) but the 2009 has over ripe fruit. I believe this is a misguided attempt by MW to make an over the top Napa Valley which might appeal to Americans. Overtones of prune juice and fruit bomb with none of the MW herbaceousness. Disappointing on past efforts. I hope this is an aberration and future vintages will be back on form. 16.5.

First a beautiful nose -- black currants, vanilla oak. Full body dark chocolate, coffee, black cherries. Long luscious finish.
