Coeur de Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2010

That feeling you get when you open a wine that is in just the right spot…

From our perspective, that is where this Bernard Dugat-Py is at right in this very moment. It has a beautiful balance of fresh black cherry, red currant, kirsch, violet, hibiscus tea, and anise next to clove, cardamom, forest floor, peat moss, fig paste, and mushroom notes.

The palate is singing with bright acidity balanced by the expressive aromas and flavors, medium, fine-grained tannins, and medium alcohol (13% ABV). It has a lingering finish. What a beautiful wine!

It is the 2010 Dugat-Py Gevrey-Chambertin “Cuvée Coeur de Roy” Très Vieilles Vignes, coming from very old, organically-farmed, and low-yielding vines, adding to the concentration of aromas and flavors. It comes from the village of Gevrey-Chambertin in the Côte de Nuits.

Du XIe Siecle Dugat Py Tres Vieilles Vignes Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir

The 9th and final Wine in the Gevrey Chambertin Grand Cru bracket. Quite a rich dense crimson in colour. A tarry nuance to the black cherries on nose and palate. A medium to full bodied palate finishing with some astringency. This is the 4th year I have been to this tasting and I have learnt that Dugat Py make their Burgundies on the large side. For that reason I was able to pick this as the Dugat Py in this blind tasting knowing the identities but not the order of service. Also my least pointed in this 9 wine bracket. — 5 years ago

Exceptional concentration. Cherry, blackberry - evolving to plum with air. Forest floor. Herbaceous. Absolutely lovely texture: so elegant. Well-integrated tannins, of course. Wish I had another bottle. — 6 years ago

Très Vieilles Vignes Chorey-les-Beaune Pinot Noir 2017

WK has long been singing praises for the wines of Dugat-Py, and a little more so as of late, so I knew I just had to give this a run upon spotting it in the store. I hate to admit to this, but I was one of those who avoided Dugat-Py for years on a handful of disappointing experience, and fueled by the stereotype of heavy extraction and overuse of new oak. Call it resource optimization then, but there's just so much great wines to drink to bother wasting time and money on those you'd likely dislike. I am, however, incredibly glad to have diverted resources to this Chorey-lès-Beaune - the reacquaintance was beautiful!

Gosh, it felt like drinking a great Barolo (although the differences are self-evident on closer inspection) with the highly aromatic floral nose, dense "stubborn-when-young" palate, noticeable tannin structure, and sweeping tensile acidity. This isn't your ethereal style of Burgundy, yet there's such purity, elegance and energy to it... much like a Barolo. The firmness on the palate only really started unravelling in day two, offering notes of cherries, strawberries, and juniper; with deeper cassis, bacon, spice and minerally notes lurking in the background; and a sort of light-roasted coffee-tinged finish. It's deep, complex, and delicious. Ah, the joys of wine!

I can definitely see now why WK's such a strong advocate of Loïc's wines. With this "entry-level" cuvee (appellation aside, can you really call a 1000 bottle run of wines from 1937-planted vines entry-level?), Dugat-Py has certainly struck a high note for me and notwithstanding scarcity, hopefully start posing greater numbers in my cellar.

Petite-Chapelle Vieilles Vignes Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2005

Really quite excellent. Pretty dark in the glass - more than expected. Purple berry aromas on the nose. Very perfumed. Medium minus body with a great long finish. Excellent refreshing acid. Mouth coating. Really excellent and perfect with a simple roast chicken with a vermouth pan sauce. — 5 years ago

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Pinot Noir 2015

The 2nd of 9 Grand Crus from Gevrey Chambertin. Mid to pale crimson in colour. Confectionery aromas. The pale colour defies the mouthfilling balanced medium bodied palate. Excellent. Good cellaring potential but you won’t need to wait forever like the Dugat Py Mazis. — 6 years ago
