Serious single-vineyard wine from extremely old, un-grafted vines growing at over 3,000 feet elevation in La Aguilera. Planted in 1895, the vineyard survived phylloxera thanks to its gravelly, sandy soils. Fermented and aged for 15 months in open-top 500-liter oak barrels, followed by an additional 4 months in concrete tanks. Dark fruit, licorice and hints of mint on the nose. One of the finest Spanish white wines I’ve had in a long time, it is 100% Albillo from vineyards in La Aguilera. Fermented and aged in oak for almost 3 years. Mineral, flinty smell of recently struck matches and gunpowder, reminiscent of some white Burgundies. Fresh, very complex, great acidity. Spectacular — 3 years ago
This outstanding clarete by Jorge Monzón of Dominio del Águila has emerged as the benchmark for the revival of Clarete. Sourced from old vineyards in La Aguilera, it is a blend of approximately 35% Tempranillo, 35% Albillo and other red and white grapes such as Bobal, Bruñal, Garnacha and Pirulés, all co-planted and fermented together. Complex, vibrant, just perfect to spend a hot summer afternoon.

100% Tempranillo from vineyards in La Horra, La Aguilera and Roa. Aged in oak for 8 months. Quite expressive nose with aromas of red and dark fruit, tobacco and some oaky notes. Fresh, strawberry notes on the palate. Balanced, easy to drink — a year ago
Hacienda Solano’s entry-level wine, Selección is mostly Tempranillo with some 2% Albillo from selected plots in the small village of La Aguilera, all farmed organically. Fermented in stainless steel with some full clusters, the 2018 Selección was partially aged in 225 and 500-liter French oak barrels for 8 months, much less than most Crianzas in the area. Aromas of red fruit and some notes of pine needles and Mediterranean herbs (some menthol?). Powerful, very smooth, fine tannins. An outstanding village wine and one of the best values in Ribera del Duero — 4 years ago
