Tuesday the 26th of January was Australia Day and a public holiday. What better way to celebrate than Australia’s best fizz Arras Grand Vintage from Tasmania. Quite light lemon in colour. Very citrussy and mineral on the nose. 7 years on Lees showing in the complexity of the palate which still shows tension and refreshment. Avoca -based maker Blue Pyrenees had a major triumph with this wine in a European fizz comp headed by Tom Stevenson; linear chardonnay with subtle yeast and contrite lemon length; unusual for a blanc de blancs to outscore the usual bigger pinot wines of Arras and Chandon; property estab 1963 by original Krug owners; picked under floodlight at night to achieve the higher night flow in acidity; AUD 35; 12%; expect long life in wine like this; exceptional flavour, few artifacts. — 10 years ago

This is Upper Yarra Valley (old source for Arras) pinot noir; 2006 made by DeBortoli; as they say, ultra sauvage (no sugar dose); hand riddled, hand disgorged, 12.5%, AUD 35; had 2 years + on Diam cork; full malo shows on nose-toffee, brioche, honey, smoke and lots of yeast, shows full pinot palate as it warms; more lemon chardonnay zip when poured very cold; big wine with impact; does not need sweetening either — 10 years ago
