Glassful

Tenuta Cucco

Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba Nebbiolo 2015

Third and last bottle of this. I don’t want to like it as much as I do because it’s 15% alcohol. But it’s a big, boisterous glassful, with lots of ripe macerated cherry, leather, and gravel on the nose, with a whiff of camphor. Mouthfilling and soft on the palate, this acids are relatively low but it’s still got nice balance for current drinking. A fair amount of tannin is buried under the cascade of fruit. Not super complex, but a satisfying accompaniment to pork cutlets Parmigiana, and a good value.

UPDATE: Night 2, a pruney, overripe character takes over. My recommendation is to drink soon and with minimal air time.

Yeah. I had similar experience with some older Barolo that had barely reached 10 years and rapidly adapted this pruny over the top note.

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2015

Alder Yarrow
9.1

Because if you’re gonna drive all the way to Colorado, you might as well bring some wine with you, right? Steaks on the grill and this glassful of dusty earth, cherries, sandalwood and leather. Needs air, like a lot of Sangiovese, but after an hour it begins really singing. — 5 years ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Obaideh Merwah 1991

A blend of Obaideh and Merwah from ancient vines with pyrrhic yields (a glassful from each vine).

In the glass, a supernaturally glowing amber with copper flecks—one friend exclaimed “This color is just ridiculous!"

The initial wave of aroma is intense and complex to the point of being overwhelming. Time stands still, the room becomes quiet. It presents as a blanket of detailed images - toast with honey (like aged Semillon), nutty yellow apple (development), honeyed cashews, bruised candied white flowers, sweet carrot halwa, apple butter, apple-balsamic, clove, almond, and toasted scone. The nose is fractal, in a way. It rewards scrutiny with ever-increasing complexity.

The developed note of carrot, tamari, and honey intensifies over time in the glass, and on the micro-scale, within a single inhalation.

There’s no oxidation or Brett here, despite being as “natural” as a wine can be (no sulfur, no wild yeast, no manipulation except maybe a small quantity of used Nevers oak.

This has undergone the transformation from a wine of fruit to a wine of wisdom - the fruit has been replaced by a honeyed, savory character, that Bartholomew Broadbent says will intensify with more age.

Gilgal Galilee Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

This is a very dark wine, almost no light gets through a glassful of it. On the nose there is a complex set of aromas. Dark fruit - blackberry, cassis, blueberry - are met with savory support from the oak. Clove, baseball glove, tobacco, earth and black pepper all play a role in the sniff. The palate is a real discovery - as dark as you like it, with firm tannins and a long finish. In California terms, the shadings are a little more like Paso than Napa - a bit rambunctious and chalky as opposed to silky and demure. In fact, the wine could have convinced me that it was a Syrah, not a Cab, had I been blind tasting it. It’s a wonderful wine that screams for a big, beautiful steak to go with it. — 3 years ago

This never fails to meet the mark. My only complaint is self directed. It was consumed too quickly and only just started to emerge fully in the final glassful. Packed with rolling intensity this is dense and flavorful. — 4 years ago

Local Election Zinfandel Blend 2021

Light opaque red color. Bright berry notes with a hint of forest-floor on the nose. Beautiful balance for such a youthful wine with an impressive weightlessness on the palate. Absolutely crushable by the water glassful and hard to stop at a single bottle for two. Official initial bottle of the 2022 Holiday week. Merry Christmas, y’all. — 4 years ago

@David Clinton I don’t eat any meat or seafood! I’ve heard arguments about some shellfish being actually vegetarian but...I’m not there yet. But could I make a highly spiced rice dish with things like marinated tempeh and chunks of hearts of palm maybe? With saffron and smoky pepper?
