Lions De Batailley

Château Batailley

Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

A very good left bank classed growth (5th growth) from a good vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant aromatics (74%). Blackcurrant and cedar - a little tomato bush. A good wine but to state the obvious does not have the class and complexity of the higher classed growths. For example 3rd growth 2009 Chateau Palmer is a stunning wine - very rich, complex with a long life in front of it - very much superior to Chateau Batailley. — 18 hours ago

@Bob McDonald knowing Bordeaux well and also knowing the politics that takes place between the Bordelais, any reclassification will not happen easily or quickly. Example, the circus ring of politics that went on with Angelus in St. Emilion that elevated their status and then I believe volunteered to rescind it. Regardless of the outcome their bottle price went way up. The process was an ugly, expensive legal fight. It is all about status and potential for a higher bottle price. If this guy is this than I should be the same or better based on location, soil, sun exposure etc.. Can’t imagine Pomerol would be any different even as small as it is in size. It took a famous, rich family pedigree many years & tons of money for Mouton to be added as a 1st Growth. Many say they bought that status and didn’t belong. I would think most now would say they do belong. It might take a 100 more years for them to agree to any change in classification or add new classification anywhere in Bordeaux. Cheers! 🍷

@Somm David T i must apologise, but when we say Napoleon i only think of the guy sinking his hand in his jacket, the one that got defeated in Waterloo. Monsieur Napolene Bonaparte born in Corse. My bad, my views are limited. Napoleon the 3rd is indeed still a Napoleon...sorry😬

@Somm David T Thanks for your comments David. Yes, I can imagine any change to the Bordeaux classification would be very political and expensive with self interest often driving the ship. At the end of the day I guess it boils down to what the punters (us) are prepared to pay for any given bottle of wine regardless of its hierarchy in any classification. Eg. Is Leroy Musigny worth $50K? Or does it become the plaything of billionaires and 3rd world dictators who only buy it because of its inflated price? Probably a debate for another day!

Domaine L'Ostal Cazes

La Livinière Minervois Red Blend 2016

2016 vintage. Jean-Michel Cazes (owner of famous Pauillac Cru Classé Lynch-Bages and more recently Haut-Batailley) bought this Minervois estate in 2002. This is the "grand vin", a blend of 70% Syrah, 15% Carignan, 20% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre. A very spicy concentrated wine that is more about power than finesse. The colour is still deep dark red with hardly any sign of evolution. Intense spicy nose. Bold and powerful with black fruit hidden in spices. Long peppery finish. Take no prisoners. Abv. 14,5%. — 3 years ago

Les Folies De La Marquetterie Brut Champagne

Celebrating the Brisbane Lions winning the AFL Grand Final in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon over the Sydney Swans. This champagne was mid yellow in colour with a fine mousse. A fruit driven palate with citrus and peach. I don’t drink a lot of Champagne but this was a real crowd pleaser. Full flavoured with 45% Chardonnay and 55% Pinot Noir. — 7 months ago

Château Marquis de Terme

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

Slightly fresher & more exotic be the Batailley.
Black fruit galore, cedar wood, minty whiffs, exotic spice.
Soft & quite mellow on the palate. Yet fresh. The tannins are so finely grained & juicy - dusty, sandy fine. Poised, so elegant, classic Bordeaux. Great mid palate, nice length & depth. This is probably at a perfect drinking window right now. So delightful.

Order has been restored to the universe. The Lions choke as usual and this wine is fantastic. Gigantic bone in rib-eye is next. Extremely approachable wine as an infant. — a year ago
