Lorenzo Accomasso, a man whose wines I have long wanted to experience. He carried the reputation as being the ultimate traditionalist; a man after my own heart! While such a title is certainly defensible, he was once considered a bit of an innovator. Lorenzo was green harvesting in the mid-1970’s, long before the practice was accepted in Barolo. This bottle, confirmed what I have long expected: I would love this wine and wish that I had better access. Alas, the production was microscopic and sadly, Lorenzo passed last year at the ripe age of 91.

Opened about two hours prior to service; enjoyed over the course of two days. Consistent throughout with very little evolution. The 2011 Riserva, a blend of Accomasso’s holdings, pours a deep garnet color with a transparent core; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with dark fruited notes of Morello cherries, pomegranate, tar, roses, talcum powder, ground cumin, dried green herbs and gravelly earth. On the palate, the wine is bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is long and the 15% ABV is almost imperceptible. This is a rustic, soulful Barolo by a true master and perfect pairing with the duo of Colorado and Japanese A5 Wagyu. Bravissimo! Drink now with patience through 2061. — 7 days ago

One of last bottles I bought in 2004 in Italy at winery. Absolutely gorgeous nose. Cherry, floral, Coca Cola. Still has lots of fruit smooth tannins and great length. Drinking window by professional stated through 2015. Has at least 5 years in my mind. — 11 years ago

80% Sangiovese, 13 % Merlot and 7% Malvasia Nera.
Dark, shiny red ruby in colour.
Red/black berries, cinnamon and pomegranate on the nose.
Bright acidity and the tannins are softening.
Dark cherries, leather, black flowers, walnuts and a light, herbal earthiness.

Another iconic producer in his 80's making a wine that is very unique. I was able to purchase a few of his older vintages recently but have not yet opened. You get a smorgasbord of flavors with dark fruits a touch of VA, balsamic & lots of spice. The restaurant gives him a whole lamb cooked and separated into single vacuum sealed packs for the opportunity to get 24 btls. — 9 years ago

Their 2006's has been sort of compressed but this beauty was pretty and expressive. Wonderful underlying structure will ensure a long life, but it's perfectly dried cassis fruit flavors are starting to take centre stage, as tannins have loosened up a little.
