Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2018

A summer day with friends spent near Red Hook, NY, harvesting the great bounty there. I forgot to snap a photo of bottle so had to rely on Delectable. This Huet Is generous young, given its rs I imagine. All about texture & balance, & that precision chenin blanc flavor ( as opposed to a broader profile with Chenins lower on totem pole). Enjoyed with roasted Sashito peppers, local sausage to start, then local beef burgers & rock fish cooked ‘en papillot’ w a cayenne butter sauce. Then off for a few swims in the local lake. — 6 years ago

I so enjoy this Chardonnay. The only possible flaw is that it’s too easy to drink and this is my last bottle! — 5 years ago

J. Daniel Cuvée Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

9.4

Nose of slightly syrupy and jammy blue fruits of; olallieberries, blueberries, huckleberries, black raspberries, blackberries, spiced plums, dark cherries, dark cherry cola, expresso roast, dried dark flowers, spice, cinnamon & anise, dry stems and leather. On the palate, full bodied, round, juicy with fine powdery tannins and darkly elegant. Fruits, of; blueberries, olallieberries, black raspberries, blackberries, plums, dark cherries, cinnamon, nutmeg. mocha powder, light vanillin, anise, espresso roast, black tea, soft leather, finely dry crushed rock powder, graphite, underbrush, poached strawberries hit the long palate set, dark rich earth, dry red flowers, liquid violets and notes of tarriness. The finish is nice resolved dark tannins, great balance of fruit & earth, solid structure, nice tension, rich, full elegance and perfect acidity that rains over the palate. Lail owns and uses fruit from two estate vineyards; the Totem Vineyard in Yountville; which is part of the original Inglenook vineyard estate. This vineyard is named after a Totem pole that was the founder of Inglenook Winery, Gustav Niebaum. Their Mole Hill vineyard is located high on the slopes of Howell Mountain at about 1600 feet. Still has 8-10 years of good life ahead of it. Photos of the Lail Vineyards and small estate building without a tasting room. — 9 years ago

@David T thanks for getting back. My wife and I are planning a US wine tour in August and looking for lesser known vineyards that produce great wines Thanks

Domaine Chantal Remy

Clos des Rosiers Morey St. Denis Monopole Pinot Noir 2011

2011 vintage. Clos des Rosiers Monopole. How odd: this tiny monopole a stone's throw from Clos des Lambreys, is not even Premier Cru, although when the vines reach their 18th year this might change. The Clos, which incorporates a flower garden, watering-hole for ducks and chickens, along with Torpedo, the Domaine's faithful dog, produces an elegant silky approachable wine that punches above its lowly position on the AOC totem pole. For those looking for a bargain, it would be hard to find better as there's really no logical reason why this plot is inferior to the one over the other side of the wall. — 11 years ago

This is high up on the totem pole, and it shows on all senses. The nose is complicated and dense, which then leads into a rich variety of notes such as tobacco, cedar, coffee and cherries. While it seems to have already evolved into its drinking window, powerful tannins and good acidity provide the hallmarks of a wine that will hold its own for a long time. — 3 years ago

Lail Vineyards

Blueprint Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc

100% Sauvignon from Totem Vineyard in Yountville plus two other vineyards in Coombsville. Barrel fermented, two to four weeks of French oak, 40% new
This is less grassy and gooseberry than a Marlborough but more assertive than many California sauvignons where the fruit gets so ripe it turns to peach and fig. This is a real Sauvignon lover’s wine with hallmarks of both New World and Old.
Pale lemon, creamy texture with crisp, well-balanced acidity. Plenty of herbal overtones without losing a fruity, mineral-driven core. Long finish - an exciting wine.
