Burgundy Under the Radar

“Burgundy remains a vast ocean of growers beyond the most famous names,” writes Neal Martin in his article Burgundy Under the Radar on Vinous. He continues, “Nothing gives me more pleasure than foraging for winemakers unknown to myself, or those that I have never visited.” What were some of Martin’s top finds on his recent trip to the region? Les Préaux Rully 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2014

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2014 Rully Préaux 1er Cru Rouge has an open, earthy, quite meaty bouquet with fine definition. The palate has a sweet core of fruit with blackberry, orange zest and red cherries. Fine tension and a vivid finish manage to deliver more clarity than the 2015. Superb! (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Grand Clos des Épenots Pommard 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2010

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2010 Pommard Clos des Epenots 1er Cru has a detailed, mineral-driven bouquet with cranberry, strawberry, sage and oregano that develops more intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, finely balanced with a grippy and quite dense finish. This is a true Pommard, a little austere but with such freshness and tension. I can envisage this meliorating over the next decade. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Les Petits Monts Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru includes 40% whole bunch fruit. It has very fine definition on the nose: wild strawberry and raspberry, rose petal and a touch of vanilla. The whole bunch is very deftly used here. The palate is fresh and full of vigour, finely chiseled tannins with a detailed and slightly floral finish. Superb! (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a backward, almost broody bouquet with pure redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit laced with mineral. This is very well defined but it will clearly need 3 or 4 years. The palate is defined by its sweet core of tannins. What impresses the most is the precision and vivacity of this Clos de Vougeot. Hints of blood orange suffuse dense red fruit on the finish. Excellent. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Les Naugues Mercurey 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2016 Mercurey Les Naugues 1er Cru has a superb bouquet with very precise scents of raspberry, red cherry and a touch of fennel. The palate is very well balanced with a crisp line of acidity, a little ferrous in style with ample finesse on the finish. This is an excellent Mercurey from François Raquillet. Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2016 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Domaine’s 0.22-hectare parcel in Ruchottes de Dessus, just below the cabotte. It is matured in 50% new oak. There is fine intensity on the nose here: blackberry, raspberry, orange pith and a light mineral presence that will hopefully become more expressive once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine line of acidity, silky smooth in texture with tightly wound red cherry, white pepper and light mineral notes that become more conspicuous towards the detailed finish. This is certainly a fine Ruchottes-Chambertin although something tells me that there is even better to come. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Santenots Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2016 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with raspberry and red cherries. Quite floral in style, it just blossoms with aeration, gaining real intensity. The palate is fleshy and ripe with a fine bead of acidity, superb poise with an edgy, mineral-driven finish that lingers in the mouth. Recommended. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Clos Charlé Givry 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2016 Givry Clos Charlé 1er Cru offers candied red fruit on the nose with just a hint of vanilla. The palate begins with some lovely redcurrant and cranberry fruit, fleshy and almost nubile with wonderful balance. Vivid and armed with great clarity, this is a really quite superb Givry from Eric Desvignes. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Taillepieds Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2015

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2015 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru shows a bit of reduction on the nose, eventually clearing to offer undergrowth and bay leaf infused red fruit. The palate is underpinned by firm tannin, impressive depth. Quite a complex and grippy Volnay with superb length. Pascal Roblet has really got a handle on this Volnay. I can see this ageing with style and panache. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)

Les Jachées Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir 2016

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Jachées has a really quite gorgeous bouquet with wonderful definition: pure, quite mineral-rich red fruit probably more in line with a Premier Cru. The palate is very well balanced with a silky smooth texture and a shimmering, vivacious finish that might lack depth and grip, but has a disarming effortless nature about it. Superb for a mere Village Cru. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2018)
