The 2018 Carema is fabulous. Deep and exquisitely layered, the 2018 shows off its depth and sheer pedigree right out of the gate. There is so much going on. Sweet dark cherry, plum, leather, menthol, spice, dried herbs and leather are some of the many nuances that flesh out in the glass. The 2013 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Nuova Regina is quite delicate in its first impression. Red fruit, mint, orange peel, rose petals and cinnamon linger on the nose. The 2017 Carema is a classy, elegant wine. This is an especially polished style for the appellation. Wild red cherry, dried herbs, mint, pine, licorice and blood orange all flesh out. The 2018 Gattinara is a stunning wine in the making. Extraordinary in its complexity and nuance, the 2018 dazzles with a kaleidoscope of aromas, flavors and textures. Kirsch, hard candy, flowers and lively acids captivate the senses. The 2018 is elegant, weightless and full of character. It is, quite frankly, everything Gattinara can and should be. This is a great place to start for readers who want to know why the 2018 vintage is so magical at Nervi-Conterno. The 2016 Uvaggio is gorgeous. Bright, effusive and chiseled, the 2016 is so expressive today. Crushed rose petal, red berry fruit, blood orange and spice are all brightened by lively acids and beams of supporting tannin. I am blown away by how fresh the 2016 is at five years of age. The 2017 Boca is delicate and understated, almost surprisingly so given the dry, warm year. Crushed rose petal, white pepper, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco lend aromatic brilliance to this weightless, wonderfully expressive wine. The Le Piane Boca has a track record of aging exquisitely. I bet that will be the case here as well. I recently opened the 2006, as I wanted to drink a slightly mature wine from the estate. Well, I was way off, as the 2006 is still very, very young! The 2017 Carema is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Sweet dried cherry, mint, tobacco, spice and worn-in leather are all typical of a wine that is heading into maturity. Mazzoni's 2015 Ghemme Ai Livelli is gorgeous. Floral and savory notes infuse the bouquet with notable presence. Light on its feet, yet wonderfully layered, the 2015 is super expressive right out of the gate. There's quite a bit of complexity, while the tannins are nicely mellowed by time.
