A sweetly scented and seductive bouquet of apples and peaches mixes with rich gingery spices and a whiff of candied citrus as the 2019 Vermentino Melacce Montecucco blossoms in the glass. This is unexpectedly rich and pliant in feel, yet also packed full of salty minerals, giving way to ripe green melon mixing with hints of raw almond and wild herbal tones. It tapers off long and spicy, also lightly structured, making for a fully satisfying experience. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2021)

A mix of smoke, crushed stone and peppery herbs evolves to show bright cherries and violets as the 2020 Rosato blossoms in the glass. Its silky textures give way to a pure yet nuanced display of wild berries and spice with pretty rosy florals that form toward the close. This tapers off medium in length to notes of hard red candies and hints of licorice. This is a fun and invigorating Rosato, produced from a blend of Sangiovese and Mammolo. A pretty yet understated mix of wet stone, dusty violets, lavender and black currants rises up from the 2018 Rosso di Montepulciano. This is soft-textured and fleshy in feel, yet energized by bright acids and a sour citrus twang that enlivens its tart red berry fruits. It tapers off incredibly fresh and mouthwatering with stoney minerals, roses and vanilla-tinged sweet spice. To be frank, I’ve seen some very poor reviews from this wine in certain social circles, yet from this experience, I can’t validate them. That said, there may be some bottle variation at play. The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano lifts up perfumed with roses, violets, sage and tea leaves in an exotic and fresh display. Its textures are silky-smooth yet lifted and juicy, staining the palate with purple-tinged florals and blueberries. There is tannin here, yet they are sweet and round, hardly getting in the way of the 2018’s jovial feel. This may not be the longest-lived Vino Nobile, but it sure will win a lot of hearts over the medium term. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2021)

Crushed stone and earthy minerals blow off to reveal sugar-dusted red currant and a hint of spiced orange, as the deeply seductive 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano opens in the glass. This is soothingly soft yet energetic with a spicy citrus tension. Red and black berries linger, along with sweet tannins, as this tapers off fresh and lifted. The 2018 may not be the longest-lived Vino Nobile from Sanguineto, but it will make a lot of people happy over the medium term. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2021)

The 2015 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva pulls you close and holds your attention firm. This opens with an initial earthy, almost-animalistic burst, at first unleashing notes of crushed ashen stone, musk and smoke. Only with time in the glass does it reveal depths of black cherry, dusty rose and cloves, all offset by a spicy whiff of blood orange. It enters the palate silky in texture, with a pure and vivid display of red currants and savory herbs nicely contrasted by hints of sour citrus and juicy acidity. Nuanced tannins linger, framing the experience well, as rosy inner florals and savory nuances of minerals and young plum resonate throughout. What an incredibly beautiful yet understated expression this is. The Riserva is a classic blend of 80% Sangiovese to 20% Canaiolo and Mammolo. Wow. (Eric Guido, Vinous, December 2021)

The 2017 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana takes its time opening in the glass, at first dusty with dried cherries and only a hint of dusty rose. Yet this is worth the wait, as its berry fruit transforms into crushed plums and raspberries, complemented by sweet herbs, hints of animal musk and flowery undergrowth. It washes dark elegant waves of mineral-tinged blackberries across the palate, offset by a twang of sour citrus, as hints of cocoa and tobacco build toward the close. This is structured and noble in feel, yet with enough primary concentration to nearly mask its grippy tannins, as touches of mint and dark chocolate linger through the medium-length finale. The balance that Capezzana has culled from this torridly hot and dry vintage is remarkable. That said, the 2017 is already drinking beautifully today after a good decant. This is a blend of 80% Sangiovese to 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. (Eric Guido, Vinous. December 2021)
