Readers will find a wide range of Rosatos to suit any occasion. Watch this space as we add more choices from our team of editors in the coming weeks. THE ITALIAN ROSÉ PARADIGM – BY ERIC GUIDO Frankly stated, Italy is not as simple as a typical wine-producing nation. This applies to Rosé more than nearly any other category. First, the country boasts over 100 different red grape varieties that can be used to make Rosato, and it’s not always the case that these varieties can be found on the front or back labels of the bottles. Second, just because the Northeast may have had a great vintage, that doesn’t mean the same holds true for the Northwest or the center or south of the peninsula. The fact is that Italy is one of the most geographically diverse winemaking countries in the world, surrounded by water on three sides, with the Alps to the north, desert winds blowing up from the south and a spine of mountains running down the middle. But here’s the good news: while it’s difficult to make a broad generalization about a single vintage and the litany of Rosé that Italy produces, the chances are that the country’s diversity works in consumers’ favor anyway; because even in the worst of years, there will always be a region that excelled, a grape variety that rose to the top and wines that will truly be worth the hunt. Two thousand twenty-one is the vintage for the majority of Italy’s Rosés current-release. The year was generally warm throughout, and most regions witnessed drastic climatic events, such as sporadic torrential rains, which seems to happen often lately, as a result of global warming. Most regions reported a more balanced year than 2020, from an aspect of heat spikes and serious drought conditions. The 2021 Rosé Nerello Mascalese di Adele is remarkably pretty with a copper-tinged, pink color and a dazzling mix of exotic spice, mint and tropical citrus. Its silky textures wash across the palate, with ripe orchard fruits and melon nicely contrasted by cooling herbal tones. The 2021 finishes with a slight tug of sweet tannin that frames the expression well, as inner florals slowly fade. I absolutely love the balance and vibrancy here. It’s round in feel with a balanced inner sweetness contrasted by tart orchard fruits. This leaves a staining of minerality and hints of sour citrus while tapering off with medium length. With a pretty, pale pink color and sweetly scented nose, the 2021 Rosa Dolce & Gabbana makes a lovely first impression. Ripe melon, Asian pear, mint and nuances of white smoke create an inviting bouquet. It’s round and elegant in feel, engulfing the palate in mineral-tinged orchard fruits and hints of chamomile. A salty flourish emerges through the finale, as notes of sour citrus and inner wet stone slowly fade. This is a total pleasure to taste. The NV Extra Brut Rosé Metodo Classico N.S. della Neve is captivating with a beguiling bouquet that leads with sweet tobacco, then transforms to show ripe peaches, chamomile and hints of raw almond. It’s silky-smooth with a fine bead of bubbles, as tension quickly mounts through a wave of saline-tinged acids and minerals that cut through with laser-like intensity. A salty flourish defines the finale, while the palate is left watering for more. This is intense on its own, but it would be dreamy with any number of rich, fatty or fried foods. The N.S. Della Neve is a Metodo classico-produced blend of 60% Nebbiolo and 40% Pinot Noir that finishes at just one gram per liter of residual sugar. Disgorgement date: February 28, 2022. The 2020 Rosé di Lulú is quite unique and perfumed in the glass, with a bouquet of Sour Patch melon, sweet spice and candied orange peels. It’s soft textured with wild inner floral tones complemented by hints of ginger, coming across more like an exotic herbal tea than wine. The result is actually quite pleasurable as this tapers off savory yet fresh with a lingering hint of spearmint. The Rosé di Lulú is a varietal Nero di Troia Rosato from Puglia.
