Oregon’s Expanding Palette of Wines

Pinot Noir’s primacy as Oregon’s dominant variety is in no danger of being challenged any time soon. With more than 20,000 planted acres, Pinot Noir constitutes a whopping 64% of the state’s vines, and almost 80% of that total is in the Willamette Valley. So, barring some crazy climate or disease event, Pinot Noir isn’t going to be taking a back seat to any other variety in the foreseeable future. However, a steadily growing number of serious white wines (Riesling and Chardonnay) and a handful of non-Pinot Noir reds have begun making the case that there’s much more to Oregon wine than its most famous and ubiquitous variety. Light bronze-hued orange-pink. A heady, complex bouquet evokes fresh red fruit, orange pith, pungent flowers and smoky minerals. Sappy, concentrated and focused on the palate, offering mineral-laced, finely etched strawberry, blood orange and honeysuckle flavors that turn livelier on the back half. The marriage of power and delicacy here is really impressive. The floral note carries emphatically through a dry, sharply focused finish that shows outstanding clarity and persistence. Shows real energy and nervy cut on the impressively long finish, which features a sexy floral nuance and an exotic touch of saffron. Juicy and densely packed, displaying a deft interplay of richness and vivacity to the citrus and orchard fruit flavors. Picks up smoky lees, honey and iodine nuances with air and shows excellent clarity and back-end lift. Displays deeper pit fruit character on the palate, offering juicy, smoke-accented nectarine, pear nectar and Meyer lemon flavors that show depth as well as strong tension. The mineral quality comes back on a very long, juicy finish that echoes the Meyer lemon and mineral notes.
