What a difference a year makes. I last tasted this at the end of 2016 and thought it would benefit from some time. It’s firing on all cylinders now, and reminiscent of the spectacular 2009s and 2011s. Extracted raspberry, smoked mesquite and hickory, balsamic, and vanilla wafer, with a dry earth and pure mineral streak that runs through it. Extraordinary savoriness.

Deeply colored and richly flavored garnacha, about like a baby Priorat. Tar, plum, black cherry, and just about obvious. I remember vintages in years past being a bit more elegant than this brooding inkpot but it's still wonderful and fairly priced - I paid $38 for it. Best of all with medium plus acidity it paired well with seafood paella

Infanticide. Needed 2 hours to really get going. A more refined Alto compared to prior experiences. Much more Chateauneuf-like and much less banana cream pie than years past. Probably less crowd-pleasing, but no longer relies solely on hedonism.

From magnum. Paired perfectly with a burning paella.
Cherry, wood, almond. Sharing with friends....
