La Gille Gigondas Red Rhone Blend
These wines really do change vintage to vintage, but tasting this one 11 years after the vintage was a treat... On the nose, this is strawberry and rhubarb pie, but really that might be better explained as a port nose... On the palate, that stewed up red fruit really feels more integrated than when tasted young... Gone is the punch of power, but replacing it is a stewiness that feels very comforting... Canned cherries, strawberries (maybe even some green pickled ones)... Yup, the more I think about this one, the picked green strawberry note becomes more and more prominent to me... That's what I'm tasting! So good... While I think I still enjoy Gigondas a little younger and more raw, where the tannins fall here has some perfection to it... Not chewy, but satisfying... The finish here is still long, but now more strawberry than cherry when more youthful... Great!
