What a classic(o). Masi calls this their gentle giant and that’s pretty accurate. Pale in complexion and and soft to drink, but still powerful and sophisticated.

Gentle light orange and brick hues. Leather and earth, dried fruits, some tobacco and smoky notes. Really soft and round acidity, but still medium bodied and great tannic qualities that play nicely with the cherries and tomato vine flavors that stand out. Good long finish. Worth the hype.

Deep ruby red wine; powerful and bold with sound structural tannins. Full-bodied, juicy, and complex; not for the faint of heart! Violets, dark fruit, and licorice with subtle earthy notes highlight this wine’s complexity.

Masi was in the forefront of the work to identify the historic "cru" vineyard sites for Amarone. The ‘15 is a big rich powerful wine. Deep Ruby, aromas of ripe dark fruits, floral and tobacco spice notes. On the palate ripe blackberry flavors, dried plum and licorice with cacao and espresso spice. Rich soft tannins, long finish, well balanced ending with nutty toasty spice. Very Nice. Good now but has plenty of aging room! A joy!

Delicious dark fruits and pepper! Really enjoyed it, especially with a beef Wellington. 😋

Powerful full bodied wine. Dark fruits with a hint of leather. Noticeable tannins and good complexity. Nice long finish. Quite liked it, but better value with other Amarones. $45

Amarone della Valpolicella is known as a deeply-hued, intense, dry (to off-dry) wine produced via the ‘appassimento’ method in Valpolicella region of Veneto, Italy, whereby the grapes are laid out to dry indoors for weeks to months following harvest.

As the grapes dry, they begin to shrivel due to the evaporation of water from within. This concentrates other components of the grape (such as the sugar and aromas / flavors) and increases the % of skin relative to remaining pulp (skin primarily contributes color, tannin, aroma/flavor).

The partly-shriveled grapes are gently pressed and slowly fermented. The resulting wine is matured at least 2 years in oak before release.

Why do winemakers do this? Primarily to enhance complexity, color / aromatic concentration, body, and produce an overall higher-octane wine.

This particular wine comes from the Amarone della Valpolicella Classico subzone, which is known for producing more elegant and aromatic expressions. We’re definitely picking up on that with this beauty! It’s made with the Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara varieties.

This wine is deep ruby. It has ripe, juicy aromas and flavors of black cherry, black currant, stewed plum, violet, anise, resin, cinnamon, nutmeg, dark chocolate, espresso, sweet tobacco, and leather. It’s structured and offers a long finish. The fruit, acidity, alcohol, and tannins strike a wonderful balance. Yum!
