Back in the day (all of four-ish years ago), this was one of the first wines I tried that really piqued my interest. It was unlike anything I had previously experienced - I wasn't even sure if I liked it, but damn if I wasn't fascinated by it. Fast forward to now and I'm finally trying that 'ol Santori again. First off, I've had a variety of amarones since then (ripassos too), and you can see that this is definitely a value wine. While most amarones will set you back a good $40 at the low end, you can find the Santori (if you can find it) for closer to $15. It makes me think of a Malbec done in the amarone style, as it's far more grapey (rather than intensely raisiny). There's a fair amount of complexity lying beneath, though, with a sweet vanilla/earth finish. My head isn't so easily turned these days, but this was still a pleasant trip down memory lane.
