It is absolutely essential for anyone who wants to discover all the nuances that make Barolo and its wines so special. Cider Revival: Dispatches from the Orchard by Jason Wilson - $21.99 You might know him as Vinous's spirits critic, but Jason Wilson has also been hard at work tasting through innumerable ciders as he chronicles the rebirth of this quintessential American beverage. Cider is the quintessential American beverage. Drank by early settlers and founding fathers, it was ubiquitous and pervasive, but following Prohibition when orchards were destroyed and neglected, cider all but disappeared. In The Cider Revival, Jason Wilson chronicles what is happening now, an extraordinary rebirth that is less than a decade old. Wine Bottle Puzzle - $18.25 Not only does this puzzle make a great conversation piece, but it's great for a rainy day at the beach. Tervis Wine Glasses - $37.99 Keep your drink as warm or cold for as long as it takes to enjoy it with these clear insulated tumblers. As an added benefit, rest easy knowing you're supporting a sustainable company. The style and shape of the vessels reflect the era in which each wine-loving author wrote their vintage lines: An Elizabethan chalice holds verse from Shakespeare, while a slender, stemmed glass is inscribed with words by Baudelaire. Vinous Maps of Napa Valley - $25.00 - $50.00 Vinous Maps are the result of many years of visiting Napa Valley and observing the land with the ultimate goal of gaining a deeper understanding of how the essence of site is ultimately reflected in the glass. Created through extensive proprietary research and boots-on-the-ground work, Vinous’ Napa Valley Maps represent the state of the art in modern cartography. Each map shows property boundaries on the front and more detailed information on the back, including historical background for each region and 3-D images that allow for unprecedented perspective of vineyard sites.

Better on Day 2,

Shacksbury

The Basque Craft Cider

Wow. Really impressive go at Basque cider from Shacksbury, which has quickly become one of my favorite cider producers in the US. Bone dry, great acid, perfect amount of volatile vinegar-y funk, with a great savory side. Delicious essence of tart, slightly bitter apple. I believe this is actually done in collaboration with a Basque producer using local apple varieties. Definitely captures a very similar character to what I expect from Basque cider. Great stuff. — 6 years ago
