Sarah occasionally pours at a tasting room in Woodinville on the weekends. Delectable: What sparked your passion for wine? Sarah Milsow-Guenther: When I went off to college my parents needed a new hobby, and it just happened to be attending local wine tastings. Then when I would come home and visit, I started going with them and got sucked in. My interest snowballed when my mom started working for a winery a few years later. I still remember the first bottle of wine that piqued my interest, a 2005 Stella Maris from Northstar Winery . D: What wine region are you wild about right now? SMG: I am still trying to learn all I can about Old World wines, specifically Austria and France , but I am still just amazed at all of the under-the-radar fantastic wines that are coming out of my home state ( Washington ) right now. D: What is the most unusual wine you’ve ever tried? SMG: There’s two that come to mind: The first, a White Pinot Noir from Icicle Ridge Winery that was unlike anything I have ever tried. The second was a bottle I was lucky enough to be able to try about 3 years ago, a Vintage Port blend from 1966. At that point I had never had anything that old before so it really opened to my eyes to what aging good port (and good wine) can do. D: What is your golden rule for wine? SMG: Everyone’s palate and knowledge-level is different when it comes to wine, so buy what you like. D: Say you’re not allowed to have wine, what is your second option? SMG: Gin from one of my favorite local distilleries, Scratch in Edmonds, WA. D: Choose a movie, book, quote, or song and pair it with a wine SMG: Silence of the Lambs with a nice Chianti ? Just kidding! Ratatouille and a nice bottle of Gorgeous Syrah from W.T. Vintners , it’s my go-to everyday wine. D: If you were a wine, what wine would you be? SMG: I would be the unexpected yet delicious wine that is made from a grape grown in a region that you would not typically associate it with. For example, a Grüner Veltliner from Washington State .
