This Week's Must-Try Wines from Vinous

Welcome to this week's Must-Try Wines from Vinous! Each week we compile a list of wines from the Vinous database that you need to add to your wine wish list. With all the various regions, producers, and grapes, no week will be the same! All of the wines listed in this feature are available for purchase on Banquet . This week's must-try wines are from Antonio Galloni’s article, Everyday Piedmont, Parts 1 & 2 . Enjoy an excerpt from his article and Part 2 reviews below! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “Piedmont has so much to offer the curious wine lover. Barolo and Barbaresco are now firmly established among the world’s greatest reds. Alto Piemonte has made huge strides in recent years. But there is so much more to Piedmont beyond those famous appellations and wines. In the hands of the best growers, Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and Piedmont’s other reds and whites deliver the same qualities that have made the region’s top bottlings so coveted. These are artisan wines from family-run domaines that convey a sense of place.” --Antonio Galloni, Everyday Piedmont, Parts 1 & 2, January 2022 1. Bartolo Mascarello 2020 Dolcetto d'Alba 2. Aves Verduno Barbera d'Alba 2020

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2020 Barbera d'Alba Aves is a gorgeous wine. Over the last few years, Fabio Alessandria has dialed back the overtness in the Aves, which yields a much more refined wine than in the past. In 2020, the Aves is especially restrained and also not that far stylistically than the straight Barbera. I would drink it over the next few years, while the fruit is vibrant. The Aves is a selection of fruit from vineyards in Verduno and Roddi. It sees about ten months in 500L barrels, including some acacia in the mix. This super-classic Barbera is a jewel of a wine. Barbera d'Alba 2019

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2019 Barbera d'Alba is fabulous. Bright and radiant, the 2019 is supple and yet classically medium in body. Soft, silky contours wrap around a core of red cherry/plum fruit. Interesting, despite its open-knit feel, the Barbera is a bit lower in alcohol than the norm, and that no doubt adds to its super-classic profile. I loved it. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2022)

Derthona Colli Tortonesi Timorasso 2019

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2019 Timorasso is powerful, layered and ample. Apricot, white flowers, almond, graphite and chamomile all grace this ample, textured Timorasso. Tropical and petrol notes grace the expansive finish. A bit of skin contact adds quite a texture. The 2019 is a big step up from the 2018. A big step. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2022)

Langhe Nebbiolo 2020

Delectable Wine
9.0

The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo is laced with crushed raspberry, mint, kirsch, orange peel and spice. Effusive and inviting, the 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo is a real gem. In 2020, Burlotto did not bottle their Barolo Acclivi. The best blocks were added to this blend.

San Luigi Dolcetto di Dogliani 2020

Delectable Wine

The 2020 Dogliani San Luigi is fruity, open knit and delicious, with plenty of red cherry/plum fruit character. Bright floral notes perk up the finish. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2022)

Barbera d'Alba 2020

Delectable Wine
8.9

The 2020 Barbera d'Alba is a soft, open-knit wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. In 2020, the Barbera is on the lighter side, as is typical for the year. There is lovely purity to the red berry, spice and floral notes. And of course, plenty of charm. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2022)

Dolcetto d'Alba 2020

Delectable Wine
9.1

The 2020 Dolcetto d'Alba is a wine of extreme beauty. Pliant and expressive, with terrific depth, the 2020 is wonderfully deep. Dark cherry, licorice, sandalwood, spice and leather lend notable complexity. This is such a great example of what Dolcetto is and can be. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2022)
