Today, things are changing very quickly. The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino opens with a dark bouquet, blending crushed ashen rocks with dried cherries and earth tones. It’s silky and round in texture, coasting ripe red fruits across an energizing core of juicy acidity. The 2020 leaves a staining of primary concentration while finishing long, with hints of hard candies and sweet spice that slowly fade. This is a very pretty Rosso that simply needs more time in bottle to blossom aromatically. (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2022)

Dark, earthy and potent, the 2017 Rosso di Montalcino holds nothing back, as a bouquet of crushed black cherries, balsam herbs and licorice burst up from the glass. This is deeply textural yet also slightly nervous in feel, with gobs of tart red and black berries propelled by vibrant acidity. The 2017 leaves a staining of primary concentration, as well as adolescent tannins to linger, forming a structured yet still lively finale. Wow, this has matured beautifully and still has a way to go. Nicely done, especially for the vintage conditions. Be aware that the size of the 2017 can become tiring after a couple of glasses. The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino takes its time opening in the glass, yet is worth the wait, as a smoky mix of balsam, rosemary, crushed rocks, dried black cherries and mint nuances form its dark bouquet. This is soft in texture and savory within, with brisk acids maintaining a lovely balance and pretty nuances of strawberry and spice that fill the senses. The 2020 tapers off with subtle tannins and medium length as rosy florals slowly fade. (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2022)

The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino captivates with its wild floral perfumes, balsam herbal tones and vivid black cherry fruit. This is pure and lifted, but almost fleeting in feel, revealing its saline minerals up front before giving way to notes of young strawberry and inner rose. Only a hint of fine tannin remains, as a pleasant flourish of inner sweetness tapers off to nuances of pomegranate. The 2018 is ready to please today, and probably has another three to possibly five years of pleasurable drinking in front of it. (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2022)

A smoky mix of wild herbs, crushed rocks, young strawberries and rose petals wafts up from the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino. It’s seamlessly silky with nuances of candied citrus and bright cherry fruits that light up the palate, as exotic inner florals amass toward the close. The 2020 maintains energy throughout, finishing remarkably fresh yet also potent and long. This is one of the most elegant vintages I’ve yet experienced from the Le Chiuse Rosso, but watch out for its 14.5% abv. that can easily sneak up on you. (Eric Guido, Vinous, October 2022)

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino tempts the senses with a perfumed mix of wild strawberries, plums, lavender and sage. This is a pure yet potent effort, with depths of mineral-laced red fruits carried across silken textural waves. The 2020 leaves notes of hard candies, licorice and pretty rosy florals while finishing with just a hint of grippy tannins that frame the wine well.
