A benchmark Chianti Classico, the Castell'in Villa estate is heralded as one of the region's most tradiional estates. Comprised of a number of vineyards from alluvial soils, this classico showcases Sangiovese's sultry side with juicy, tart red cherries, anise and tobacco.

In the mid-90s, former New Yorkers Silvio & Catalina Messena went to Tuscany to care for Silvio's mother and wound up relocating to plant their own roots in his family's vineyard. While it wears a Toscano Rosso desgination, it is vinified in the old Chianti tradition and speaks true to that more recogizable name with deep fruit notes and plenty of dusty earth.

Monte Bernardi is a young estate quickly making a name for itself and it's not hard to understand how. #tuscantable — 10 years ago
The 1500 ft elevation vineyards for this Rosso di Montalcino shines through to demonstrate the leaner, brighter side Tuscan wine. It is essentially the younger sibling to the regal Brunello di Montalcino (which require a longer aging time). It has the same chiseled elegance of it's nobile big brother, but with finer, lighter tannins and more fruit forwardness that beckons to be drunk young and carefree.

One for the natural wine fans, Fabbrica di San Martino is a legendary estate founded in 1735 that is now Demeter certified for biodynamics. Arcipressi is their field blend of over 15 grapes all cofermented and aged in stainless steel. Its fresh cherry and barnyard flavors has a Bandol-like quality, yet the bright acidity and taut tannins are still distinctly Tuscan.

From the southern hills of Tuscany's Montepulciano, Villa Sant'Anna is a small family affair of Simona Ruggeri and her two daughters. From 30 year old vines and aged in traditional botti, their Chianti Colli Senesi has a seriousness and elegance rarely found in any wines this price. It's combination of deep, dark fruit, floral lift and earthy undertones makes for a quintessential Italian table wine.

Founded by an American ex-pat and farmed biodynamically, Monte Bernardi is a young estate quickly making a name for itself. Sa'etta is its top bottling, made from the best grapes of the single vineyard and given additional aging (hence riserva). The luscious fruit of 2009's warm summer shines through in ripe dark berry notes, and its maturity has both resolved the tannins and revealed notes of leather, earth and tar.
