Alfredo Maestro (Bodegas y Viñedos Maestro Tejero)
El Marciano Grenache
I’m lucky enough to usually have wine open for more than 1 day. I love to watch wine develop over 1 or 4 days...I love this wine. Everything everyone says about it makes sense, dunk, Brett, effervescent...But all that stuff blows off to racy, fresh, pepper driven Grenache. High elevation, low intervention, no oak, 100% destemmed. He walks the vineyard at night, at over 3000Ft elevation, and always feels like he’s going to get taken away by aliens.

Feb 5th, 2019Was better after decanting and sitting (got rid of some of the fizziness), but ultimately not interesting enough to be enjoyable for its interesting-ness alone, and not good enough to just be a good wine.

Feb 14th, 2021Medium ruby with a wide brim and a slight lavender tinge. If you don’t like funk, don’t even step to this. Smoked tobacco, mint, leather, and dark berries initially on the nose. Funky barnyard starts to creep in and it never really leaves. Thankfully. This is big and quite bold Grenache, but it still maintains a freshness and effervescent essence. Plenty dense with a nice streak of acidity running throughout, this is super dry and a little tart. Blackberries and dried cherries show up on the palate but the star of the show is that barnyard with all the earthiness and funk you could want. This is a gorgeous Grenache, a beautiful wine. This guy just knows what the hell he’s doing.
