Altamura
Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Holy Toledo this was much sweeter than I had expected. Somewhat disappointing given how much I have enjoyed some of Altamura's other wines. It's not that it has no appeal, but it tastes almost like a weak Sauterne, which sounds weird to say, but it is that heavy and sweet. If you are interested in a California Sauvignon Blanc, try Merry Edwards. It has much more complexity and balance than this. I was able to get the Altamura on sale, so it was less than the Merry Edwards, but it was, indeed, much less than the Merry Edwards, if you know what I mean! If you want something that almost borders on a dessert wine, this may be just the ticket. All in all, it is pretty unique, but it ranges far afield from what I would expect from this varietal.

Oct 10th, 2015Great wine. Good tropical fruit and oak very well balanced can stand alone or be paired with food.

Sep 24th, 2015Wow, what an interesting wine. Light golden in color. Slightly sour yeasty notes on the nose followed by Meyer lemon, grapefruit and tropical fruit. Tastes like a Meyer caramelized meyer lemon tart surrounded by macerated pineapple or grapefruit. Creamy and dessert-like, yet still dry. High acid balances the cream.

Sep 23rd, 20152010-paid $48 plus tax; WOW, beautiful, luscious, sweet thick, decadent, moscato like complex bouquet, great body, great legs for a white, long. slightly citrus finish, wife says 10, and excellent; I say 9.6, so that is a 9.8; our highest rating since there is no such thing as a 10; now our premium Sauvignon Blanc, bar none; we will be buying more when we visit in August.

Jul 12th, 2015It's unlike any other Sauv Blanc i've ever tasted. It's rich with ripe fruit and toasty oak but doesn't have the acidity I would expect. That's not really a negative. This wine is just a unique beast.
