Bass Phillip
Premium Gippsland Pinot Noir
See several previous Delectable Notes. This bottle was the last of 6 and absolutely outstanding. Light Ruby and tawny - semi transparent. Red and black cherry with rose petals and Sous Bois. Intoxicating perfume with dried rose petals and red florals generally - a slight gamey note. Very judicious use of oak - in perfect balance with the fruit. Phillip Jones, the winemaker and owner back then, before the sale to Jacques Fourrier said the difference between good Pinot Noir and great Pinot Noir is texture. In summary a great Pinot Noir by any measure and high Premier Cru in my experience.

May 8th, 2022Always a pleasure to have a Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir from a good year. My 2nd last bottle of 6. Prior notes still apply - In Summary: Light Ruby in colour with a tawny edge. A beautiful nose with aromas of dried roses, red florals in general, Sous Bois and mushrooms. Medium plus palate intensity. Stewed red fruits with some savoury notes. I agree with winemaker Phillip Jones when he says this wine has great texture. This would certainly hold its own in any blind tasting with leading red Burgundies.

May 30th, 2021Medium ruby red with a tawny edge. As per previous notes - always a delight to taste this wine. Aromatics of red fruits (strawberry) rose petals, beetroot and compost heap. The palate is very complex and so multifaceted - earthy red fruits with a degree of sweetness. A gorgeous new world Pinot - one of the best of recent times. Would love to put this in a lineup of 2010 Premier and Grand Cru Butgundies and taste them all blind. It would surprise many people.

Aug 22nd, 2020Catching up with old wine notes now that I’m spending more time at home. Aromas of earth, mushrooms, beetroot, root vegetables in general. Afterwards - dried rose petals. Easily Premier Cru standard. The palate is intense, fluid, long and very Burgundian - the most of any Australian Pinot although I am hearing wonderful things about By Farr Serre. A sooty tarry earthy element developed after a while. A brilliant Pinot Noir.

Mar 28th, 2020Generally regarded as one of Australia’s top Pinot Noirs. This is the second one of 6 I had in the cellar and based on this I need to drink the remainder in the next couple of years. The wine is pale to medium Ruby. On the nose there are sweet dusty cherry aromas with lovely florals. The palate is just medium bodied, quite sweet, lighter than expected but quite a persistent long finish. A very good Pinot but lacking some mid palate oomph. With time stewed red fruits - that Bass Phillip swampiness. I have had better examples of the Premium. Next in 4 to 6 months. Footnote: My previous note in May 2019 indicates the wine was showing better at the time.

Jan 12th, 2020Mid to pale crimson. The intensity on the palate belies its paleish colour - textbook Bass Phillip. Earthy compost heap, cherry, mushroom and beetroot aromas and flavours. Superb wine. A briefer note than usual - too busy enjoying the wine - the first of 6 in the cellar - the others to be enjoyed over the next 5 plus years.
