Bodegas Balbas
Gran Reserva Ribera del Duero Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon
Still totally fresh. Cherry juice, root beer, meat, cedar, mineral, orange peel acidity. Both structured and juicy. Light on the palate. Delicious.

Mar 11th, 2017An intriguing wine, the Cabernet is more prominent than the regular reserve, I base this on its astringency and some unusual balsam/cedar qualities. Chocolate, smoke, tobacco leaf are all there, but what I'm not finding is the bright fresh fruit of the Tempranillo, much less the almost Nebbiolo level of balance between power and finesse that made the 01 reserve one of the best wines of recent years. Despite its undoubted merits, at three times the price of the reserve, I'm disappointed.
