Deep garnet red. Dark red fruits with baking spices and creamy dark cocoa on the nose. Moderate tannins (7/10) and full bodied. Slightly dusty on the palate with notes of dark cocoa and a little savory in the medium plus finish. Pretty well integrated and a beautiful wine for under $20. Drink till 2022.

Bodegas Luis Cañas is a family-owned winery that dates back to 1928. Today it is one of the leading wineries of Rioja Alavesa with 222 acres of their own Tempranillo, Viura, Graciano, and Mazuelo vineyards and another 494 acres controlled by their regular grape suppliers. Ruby with aromas of ripe red fruit with cedar notes. On the palate blackberry and cherry with notes of cacao, oak and vanilla spice. Well balanced with smooth tannins. Lingering finish ending with mineral notes.

Round, rich full bodied elegance, tannins are fairly well resolved and intergraded for an 09. Dark fruits, expresso coffee grounds, saddlewood, dark chocolate, violets, soft spice, nice use off oak that reveals a cinnamon /vanilla barrel toast good acidity and a long beautiful finish that lasts.

Feb 15th, 2025The truly outstanding pqr of this wine keeps surprising me. Spiced Red fruits, creamy cocoa combined with pleasant freshness and some hints of ageing. Wine offers medium intensity & length and absolutely no sign of approaching its decline yet.

A favorite Rioja. Fortunate to have visited the vineyard and bought this bottle there. Aged a few years and it is delicious.
