Château Beychevelle
Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend
The 1989 Beychevelle repeats its performance from a blind tasting in London earlier in 2018. It has an old-school bouquet of dusky black fruit, morels and that light seawater note. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sharp tannin and rustic in style, featuring leathery red fruit and iron ore, though as I noted before, it has faded in recent years and I cannot see much benefit in cellaring this longer. Tasted from an ex-cellar bottle at the château. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2019)

Jan 18th, 2015Elegant and perfumed, the palate was less persistent but still a great wine showing lighter red fruits, apple skin, earth, flowers and leather.

Dec 26th, 20141989 vintage. Top shoulder fill with 80% saturated cork. Not decanted. Excellent color. Tasted after one hour and two hours open. Dusty musty nose. Waifish Beychevelle body. Big cedar and stale cigar, sandalwood and cassis on the flavors. More stuffing than expected. Enduring, dirty finish. In a 750ml format, another 3-5 years to be gleaned at this high level. Larger format could extend out to 2035 at the latest. 11.01.24.

Nov 1st, 2024Dollar for dollar a really lovely wine. Enjoyed along side a 1995 Lynch-Bages with an oeufs en Meurette dish. Just a great all-around wine, great color, lovely nose and great mouthfeel. Displayed the elegance of St Julien. Look out for 1989s down the stack from Saint Julien for sure.
