The Monterey County Merlot by Château Julien is the best Merlot from California that I've tried. The 2014 vintage is just now reaching maturity and is almost perfect. You should let the wine decant for at least 20 minutes before enjoying. I loved it!

Maybe the wine has gone bad, but you're hit with a strong alcohol taste. Not smooth at all.
