Nov 19th, 2024The 1989 Palmer has vied with the 1983 as the highlight of the decade, so it is fascinating to revisit it at 30 years old. It has a wonderful bouquet of degraded red berry fruit, singed leather and hints of game and mint, beautifully defined and still so fresh, yet undeniably old-school in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and still brimming with vigor, delivering a fine bead of acidity and a touch of cracked black pepper. A very detailed, engaging finish urges you back for another sip. A brilliant Palmer, and judging from this showing, it has another two decades of pleasure to give. Tasted from an ex-cellar bottle at the château. (Neal Martin, Vinous, September 2019)

Sep 13th, 2019Happy 30th Birthday to my wife and to this bottle- we enjoyed with friends and family at the wonderful Saison in SF. Smelled so good I didn’t want to drink it- tons of purple florals, cedar, spice box, elegant old perfumes and dark purple and black fruit, which were still very fresh smelling. Palate was quite ethereal, a bit austere, but wonderfully balanced with fruit, tannin and acid doing a nice dance. Not as much impact as the nose but a very special bottle for a special occasion.

Jul 8th, 2019Beautiful wine. This was direct from the Chateau and it showed. Among the most elegant and poised Bordeaux I’ve had, reminded me of Clos Rougeard, fair bit of acidity and lift. Very aromatic. 12% alcohol. They don’t (can’t) make it like this any more. Excellent. 1989 Vintage

Oct 23rd, 2018#1989 #ChateauPalmer #Margaux #MahlerBesse Yummm :) Violets draw you in on the nose & then the journey begins... Tart Blackberry, Cassis, & Boysenberry... Earthy leather & tobacco, strong salinity, clove spice & licorice... #Sexy Silky, powerful... One of their best vintages and I can't wait to taste it again in another 10 years. 🙏
