This has been in my pantry for years, so I decided to open it. I tend to gravitate away from new world, certainly away from merlot. However, and this is why I love wine, it is completely delightful and surprising. It has a finesse and structure that completely floored me. It is not in any way syrupy, heavy, or harsh, which is what I generally associate with California merlot. Stone fruits and berries with low to moderate tannins and a very mild acidity for a beautiful balance. A totally unexpected pleasure. To the point that I might seek out more recent vintages, and, for me, that is saying something. I wonder what else I have in my pantry!
