Michel-Schlumberger (Benchland Wine Estate)
Le Sage Dry Creek Valley Merlot
Medium ruby with wide edges. Really nice nose of chocolate mousse, vanilla bean, and some stewed plums. This is so obviously a Merlot made for Cab drinkers. There’s really nothing here to suggest that it is Merlot. Which is a shame, because Merlot can be beautiful on its own. On the palate, the fruit is hard to find. More chocolate, along with pencil lead, funky herbs, and old tobacco. All in all, a nice Cab masquerading as a subpar Merlot.
