Pahlmeyer
Napa Valley Proprietary Red Blend
Second of the blind wines this evening. Ruby core with garnet edges. Layered nose with spices, anise, a touch of petrol, plums, toasted and graphite. Heavy tannins (7/10) yet still rounded. Balanced acidity and full bodied. Complex palate with plums, dark berries, blackberries, black currants, floral, pencil shavings and crushed gravel in the long finish. Drink till 2027.
Decanted for five hours.

Last of the three wines to celebrate passing with distinction on the WSET 2 and what a guess it was.
Deep garnet red with a touch lighter on the edges. Dark red berries throughout on the nose with vanilla and a touch of cinnamon. Mixed through all of this was a distinct note of acetone. Fuller attack than finish with medium to heavy tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus bodied. Notes of spices, dark red berries, raisins, plums and some sweet spices. Long and lingering finish. Still seems to need a little bit of time to integrate. Was given two hours in the decant but could easier use longer. Drink till 2026. (91+)
First opinion was that this was a Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red that was from between 2003 and 2006. But seemed to have a touch more umph than a 2003 or 2004. I know the 2005 was supposed to be an amazing vintage and this reminded us of the 2008 but a touch older. So final guess was the 2006 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red.

Drinking better than I expected! Lots of cassis and dried berry Cab notes on the nose, but mellower on the palate with fine tannins.

Feb 18th, 2017A very big muscular wine. I think this wine will only get much better . The wine without hesitation will age another 10+ years.

May 17th, 2015Let it decant for 2-3 hours. Took time to open up, but when it did it was great. Plumb and blackberry on the nose. Super smooth mid palate. Spice, a bit of earth and black fruit on the finish. Looking to acquire more of this. ;-)
