Pieropan
Calvarino Soave Classico Garganega Trebbiano
Quite shy at this stage, the single-vineyard 2019 Calvarino from Soave’s iconic producer Pieropan takes quite some coaxing from the glass, even having been decanted. It has reticent but enticing aromas of lemon juice, honey, some nuttiness and even a hint of star anise, while the palate is much more forthcoming. Lemons first, fresh, ripe and delicious; then, it caresses into peaches and melons, with tangy acidity but a very supple texture. The finish is quite long, and saline. Really a very pretty wine that I think will ultimately benefit from some mid-term ageing.

Mar 31st, 2024Yellow/gold. New oak on the nose, tangerine and nectarine, saline — briny, oxidative — cheese rind. Leesy, smoky. Botrytis notes: honey and ginger! Beeswax. Clay/mushroom/compost. Medium plus to elevated acidity and alcohol. Phenolic bitterness. Long lasting finish.

Dec 14th, 2017Wonderfully flexible wine. Had it with shrimp pasta in a tomato, cream, and vermouth sauce, and the pairing was incredible.

Dec 18th, 2019The nose is, for the lack of better word, breezy, with floral, lemon, detergent (not in a bad way), sea salt, and mint, which is quite lovely. Palate is flat and simple, but with a long bitter finish.
