Needs a day or 2 to open up. Starts almost like a thin Beaujolais, but gradually opens up. Heavy strawberry and Provencal herb notes. Stays light bodied, but pairs well with dishes like Coq au Vin or a white bean gratin. Well priced at ~$13 for 1L. — 5 years ago

Acid, cut flower stems, and rosemary on the nose. Scallion and lemon peel, with slightest touch of burnt sugar, on the palate. A clutch pairing for herring or fatty mackerel (as it is paired often at Lilia), but it's priced a little optimistically at $35-ish. It makes the by-the-glass price elsewhere paradoxically attractive, since it really flourishes when paired with foods that I don't often cook at home. — 5 years ago

Cherry, musky, touch of matcha and mushroom on the nose. Lean and muscular, sour cherry, salt on the palate. It's one of those "field blend" CA reds, but with more lithe and light on its feet. 2015 vintage. — 6 years ago

Touch of salt, apple and light baking spice on the nose. Mix of green apple and pickled fruit on the palate, with a medium finish. More tart and vinegar than your typical albarino. 2018 vintage. — 6 years ago

Paler in the glass than many peers. Honeysuckle, toasted wheat, and touch of anise on the nose. First sip, sparkles. Then, slightly more astringent and stone notes, and peach pit and sweetened bean sprouts in its slight muskiness. More toasty than creamy, like a Chablis in cozy, worn cashmere vs the typical CA Chardonnay, jumping in the pool in his Hawaiian shirt and Pina colada. — 5 years ago

Barnyard and wet suede, and astringent high notes, on the nose. Sour tropical peels, pith, and unsweetened lime on the palate. Different, and difficult by itself. But sings once paired with salt, brine, and fat. — 5 years ago

Heavy, inky in the glass. Port-like richness, roses, tulips, and Concord grapes on the nose. Much lighter on the palate than nose, with notes of sour plum, cherry stem, and dry Sherry on the palate. Like a rich Shiraz, cut down and trimmed into a fitted Tom Ford suit. 2016 vintage. — 6 years ago

An Elke-based wine, from when she and he partnered out of her winery. Dusty and faint grape jolly rancher in the glass. Boysenberry, slightly pine-y, and wet stone on the nose. Sour cherry, stem, mossy, and touch of leather on the palate. A layer of smoke and pear on the finish. Deliciously rustic, with nice subtleties. Opens up over 2 days nicely (opened in Dec 2019). The best kind of "garage wine', right here. — 5 years ago

Needs a day to open and loosen up. Touch of field greens, Indian spice, and cherry stem on the nose. Sour cherry, cranberry, and hints of pine on the palate. Much more memorable and better with food (paired with baked cod and watercress tonight) than the vats of $20 OR or NZ pinots washing up on our doorstep... — 5 years ago

Saltaire and touch of peach on the nose. Crisp, mineral, hint of white grapefruit and sweet onion. Like a thick, full-in-the-mouth Chablis in a slinky evening dress. 2014 vintage. — 6 years ago
