Summertime, Vol. 2! I have a slight preference for this more forceful, Mourvèdre-driven rosé but my wife quickly reminded me how subjective was such a judgment. She preferred the more floral, dare I say more feminine, Clos Canarelli rosé. Remarkable rosé by virtue of its pale color, complex aromas of red berry fruit underscored by mineral, terroir-driven, notes. These impressions are confirmed on the palate where the wine is fresh, lithe, and balanced. The relatively low alcohol is a welcome relief, contributing to this wine's eminent drinkability. Ripe notes of semi-dried dark fruits; amazingly young and fresh but its 17% are totally masked by the supple, velvety texture of the wine. Tasted blind, everyone thought it was closer to 14%. — 8 years ago

This wine from the Thienpont "stable" is unusual in that it's a "blend" of 100% Merlot. Indeed, the Thienpont clan has long been an ardent supporter of the Malbec grape. The wine has an amazingly deep, dark color, still nearby purple in spite of its being 10 years old. The nose is seductive with aromas of black truffles, forest floor, and a mixed bag of Provençal herbs. The palate is dynamic with great mineral tension and flavors of black fruits. The tannins are just a trifle dry in the finish. It's still a remarkable wine for this, the coldest growing area in Bordeaux. Kudos to the Thienponts. — 10 years ago
