2013 vintage, disgorged January 2016. Pinot noir from Stuart Bewley’s vineyard near Laytonville. Bright cheerful and very-berried, this wine was illuminating in its food pairing mastery. With a simple crab salad served on Belgian endive the wine unfolded additional layers of flavor within the food and nuanced the character of fruit in the wine itself. It’s a New World sparkler that reaches within and masterfully moves beyond what at first seems a simple and cheerful wine. Illuminating experience and delicious instruction. — 7 years ago

2016 vintage. Clean and focused, this is the intense interpretation of volcanic soil. Screaming minerality, acidity not all that raging, a complete package from the get-go. Simplicity where the parts work together well. Boldly drink. — 7 years ago

2011 vintage. Offdry but racy. Touch of wonderful musty age on nose, vibrant floral tropical. Juicy wonder on palate, a race to pleasureville. Some tertiary development for those who look, but this is lithe hedonism for the common man #signmeup — 7 years ago

Cabernet Franc from 30something yo vines. Planted on gravel and sand, raised in concrete. Very slight welcoming brett on nose, at first tartly fruity, somewhat vegetal. But it is the rocks and sand that linger. Lean, savory, crunchy. Thanksgiving in the Shire.

Pet-nat nosiola from Alto Adige, farmed biodynamically. At first, simple, light and fresh, an unsweetened primary version of a bellini. The more you return, the longer your glance . . . things turn wonderfully intense, earthy, focused, not dirty but a weighty focus. Not a frivolous frizzante — 7 years ago

disgorged 23 February 2016, planted 1983 south-easterly facing plot is located at mid-slope on very sandy soil. 100% Pinot Noir, 2.5g/l dosage, made in vats and small oak barrels. Starburst nose, expressive of strawberry and cherry, deeply red fruited, fruit disappears on palate--austere and dominated by structural elements, with fruit recessed to a beautiful haunting memory, rocky and dry, complex and silencing, a world-stopping moment of greatness, a Champagne worthy of ending a year

From a region that had 3000ha planted in 1930s, now 18ha--amidst a deluge of residential and commercial sprawl outside Lisbon. Own-rooted malvasia in sandy soils. Westernmost appellation in continental Europe planted right on Atlantic. By a foundation dedicated to saving this wine heritage. What *doesn't* this wine offer? Stunning salinity, slightly oxidative, ripping minerality, generous and outrageous. — 8 years ago
