White peach and mango are wreathed in heliotrope and honeysuckle, accompanied by a hazy hint of yeastiness and fermentative “stink” familiar from youthful wines at this address. The midpalate impression frees itself entirely from any haziness, delivering floral profusion and a luscious abundance of fruit utterly transparent to stony, smoky and mouthwateringly marine nuances. “It seems to be a particularly good year for Zeltinger,” observed Katharina Prüm, noting that this particular wine made significant qualitative strides in its first nine months. Cheesy fermentative overtones give way to a site-typical amalgam of fresh apple garlanded in honeysuckle and heliotrope. This is another of those Prüm Kabinetts that is watery in a positive sense of that word, combining watercolor-like transparency and wash of flavor with delicacy and refreshment. As with the corresponding Graacher, the finishing sense of wet stone and floral perfume is striking, and here a mouthwatering hint of salinity adds significantly to the appeal. The 2009 Numanthia is inlaid with fabulous, complex notes of black cherry, Italian plum, bittersweet chocolate, maple, heliotrope, and dusty, sun-baked earth. On the palate, the tannins are structured and slightly grippy, and the alcohol is well integrated—given that it’s at 15%, Numanthia carries it well, showing a great deal of finesse despite innate power.
