A JK Carriere of momentous proportion, with a decidedly Burgundian sensibility, the 2004 Antoinette opens with expressive aromas of damp tilth, forest floor, roasted game, cranberry compote and rose hips. There is a wildness to this wine that is difficult to pinpoint, solitary treks through pristine forest in the Olympic Peninsula come to mind. The acid, the purity of fruit and absolute terroir shines through. Masculine yet elegant, it finishes with dried herbs, mint and pink peppercorn. — 12 years ago

Madeline and cornbread entry succumbs to rice paper smoke aromas and flint-strike nose. Lemongrass, ginger and smoke emerge momentous and peaty in the middle with caramel and hazelnut oil fringes. The flamboyant 1996 is another momentous Chateau Margaux. It is endowed with a lavish deep ruby core and exuberant aromas of blueberries, chocolate, led pencil shavings, damp earth and cigar humidor. This hedonistic concoction spoils the palate with its incredibly soft texture and perfectly integrated, well polished tannins while revealing delicate, yet pronounced notes of wild raspberries, burnt tar, caramel, kirsch and creme de cassis. And as one may expect after such a high display of refinement and finesse the endless velvety finish is yet another stunning quality of this truly outstanding wine. A marvel with a long and bright future ahead of it still. Enjoy it over the next twenty-five years.

Another Nebb I was forced to pay attention to as it was paired with one of the courses during dinner. Bigger than the 14' Cascina Fontana - perhaps even the biggest red of the night, but somewhat not unexpected for the vintage. Nevertheless, it's still elegant and polished. Palate was full of dry sweet red fruit and spice, balanced by a clean racy finish and dense minerality. Nose was driven by sweet berry notes, some orange oil, leather, pepper, dried herbs, balsamic. Gripping tannins. Muscular, but finessed. A momentous effort. As expected of CW's choice!

NB: Macerated for 30 days and then aged in large Slavonian Oak (20 HL to 40 HL) for two years, followed by two more years in the bottle. Annual production is usually around 4000 bottles. The write-ups on Chambers St Wines and Vinhulen are nice reads - Ferdinando's change from modern to traditional, to eschewing chemicals in the vineyard and even letting the undergrowth run wild, to the "greatness" of Boscareto. Cracked a bottle of the 2012 to celebrate good news. It's a stunner.

Seductive dark red fruits and a deep rich kalamata olive jump out of the glass. Underneath there's a potpourri of spice and exotic wood with perhaps a hint of vanilla bean from the barrel.

A very full, round mouthfeel carries evocative flavors of Bing cherry and fleshy plum with a long meaty mid palate, finishing with a wisp of smoke and herbs. Utterly complex and pleasure inducing.

This bottle is worthy of even the most discerning critic and appropriate for any momentous occasion. Savor with a cherished friend or lover! — 11 years ago
