Smokey cherries, maybe a little vanilla. Smooth and earthy. It shows legs, a out 13% alcohol. Develops well with air, becoming dryer. Worked well with short ribs and pork. I liked it. — 4 years ago
Had side by side with some big cabs so it was a bit green but held its own. Love the south paw. — 5 years ago

A pot of wild creamed honey to scoop my bear paw into. — 6 years ago
This producer has been batting 1000 recently. Nose is beautiful butterscotch and birthday cake. Plus paw paw and orange creamsicle, palate has fabulous acid and some nice minerals, also very long. Quite honeyed but with a wonderful phenolic bite, lingers unbelievably long. Great right out of the gate. — 3 years ago
***I was wrong - after tasting the 3rd time, James Suckling was right. This is a lovely wine, perhaps it does earn the 93 points.*** Pronounced aroma which is bramble fruit, touch of herbs and anise and a back note of toasted oak. Lovely smell where the taste will eventually catch up given time to breathe. Tannins are a bit grizzly, long finish with more licorice hints and I agree there’s a zing of black pepper but it’s subtle. Acidity is right and overall it works really well and is quite food friendly. All of this after a full day in the wine fridge as it’s really tight after uncorking. Take into account the $9 price on sale at Total Wine and the QPR is through the roof. — 5 years ago
In a newsletter I wrote: ‘Margalagua’ roughly translates to ‘Mother of Water’ and I think it is obvious that the Mother of Water is wine. This is a wine for all weather, the weather forever thirsty, you always in need. The grapes are a busy blend of Listan Negro, Listan Prieto, Baboso, Negramoll and Malvasia Negra. The vines are at least 100 years old and untrained like an old dog that can’t learn new tricks but aren’t his old tricks still so good? He can’t differentiate a formal paw shake and a casual high five but he knows raising a paw to yours results in a mouthful of flavour and you too can expect a mouthful of flavour from the Margalagua. Fermented in old 500 liter barrels with the whole grape clusters included, and then raised in neutral 500 liter French oak barrels for 11 months. A tantalizing mixture of pepper and stones, pungent aromatics, with wonderful deep umami notes, high-toned citrus, spice and flowers. Float in this current, dream in the stream. — 5 years ago
