Calpella Ranch Petit Syrah 2010

@Delectable Wine this is the Petit Syrah from Voluptas Calpella Ranch. It was not in the database.

Drinking at prime today! This was a dark and inky pour. Served pop and pour. Black and purple fruit on the nose. Powerful and dark. Had a baking spice to the nose as well. Entry is dark and dense. Sweet black and even a touch of brambly orchard fruit. Middle has more baking spice and baked plums and figs. Finishes with intense mouth coating fruit and still quite a bit of tannic influence. Grapes sourced from Mendocino. Full bodiedz, full throttle, and right at optimal drinking. Wow.

Voluptas

Eastern Hillside Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Correction @Delectable Wine -- this is the 2013 Voluptas Eastern Hillside Cabernet. Very surprised that they had the Merlot listed but probably was because I posted the Merlot about a year or so ago. This wine opened up with some stiff competition including a 2010 Vineyard 29 Helena cab, a 2010 AltaGracia, a 2015 Montagu Cab Rutherford, and an 05 Meteor Cab. This one still did rather well. Took about an hour to get going. I was really surprised that this one didn't show more of the mushroom side, but rather showed an immense structure that could have easily spent 3 years continuing to improve. The nose was quite youthful. Blackberry jam, herb, earth. The entry was a little more toned down blackberry, lots of more youthful fruit, herb, earth, and black pepper on the finish. To me, this was in the running for th red WOTN. The white WOTN still between the Aubert, Peter Michael, and the sleeper Rodde 2011 Coombsville Chard that took everyone by surprise. This wine finished with softened tannin, and IMO even though the notes on the nose were very divergent from the AltaGracia, this wine most resembled the AltaGracia on the finish. Well done Bud! — 7 years ago

@Eric Shanks , @Ryan Vento , yes definitely admit the face could use some touching up. Not bad for a private label considering #boobies , so.... :) the wines are pretty stellar though.

Pigoni Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2013

9.4

@Delectable Wine : This is the 2013 Voluptas Cabernet Franc from Pigoni Vineyard, Geyserville.

I’ve really enjoyed these Voluptas wines that
@Mark Flesher has had the privilege of being able to get access to (guy makes these in a garage! His merlot is insanely good). This is a fantastic CF! So floral with violets and candied blue and black fruit. A sweet tar and tobacco note aromatically too. A rich palate with licorice, boysenberry, and dusted cocoa leaves. Dark chocolate covered black cherries on the finish. Pulls back just before this becomes decadent. Wish this guy would make these wines more easily available!

@Bill Bender : You’re welcome for the label.

I would give this a 95.4.... revised my rating a bit after sleeping on it. This wine has a beautiful black cherry nose and almost has a minty character. Entry is dominated by black cherry and a bit of cola, hint of herb. Middle gains a little sweet tobacco. Finishes with still a tiny bit of stiff oak tannin but an excellent black cherry and cola finish. A full bodied monster that hits on all cylinders and leaves no questions unanswered.

Penfolds

Grange South Australia Shiraz 1999

Surprised at how youthful this is. Or should I? Drinking well. Blackberry and pepper and a hint of bacon fat pretty much surrounds this rather voluptuous wine. Full bodied monster. Very classic Shiraz from the land down under. Super glad I did not choose to open up anything from voluptas, is this wine would have crushed it rather easily at almost 20 years of age. A very impressive wine with Incredible depth. Has another 20 years left in it without a doubt. Glad I got to try this! — 6 years ago

It was doing exceptionally well. Hard to imagine it was nearly 20 years old.

This was my first Penfolds...been dying to try one. Showed very youthful...menthol and prune; youthful blackberry and cassis; chalky; a battle of red, black and blue fruit to take over. After time in glass this is explosive! Graham cracker topped with black cherries. Will go the distance.

Araujo Estate

Altagracia Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2010

Kind of weird notes on this bottle. Honestly the bottle of Voluptas 2013 "garage wine" killed this bottle. Had quite a bit of green pepper and eucalyptus notes on the nose (is this one still good?). The wine had a nice blackberry front, and still quite a youthful core in the middle and finish. There were many parallels between this wine and the 2013 Voluptas Cab Eastern Napa Hillside. Finished with a lot of youthful tannin. This wine really took about 2 hours to come into its own, and I'm glad I have that one more locked away than the 10's. — 7 years ago
