SoSo Lovely (SoSo) cohosts Bad and Boozy Podcast , a weekly show in which she and DeeAsia Ali discuss wine, life, and other likka (liquor) related shenanigans. The California native was introduced to wine on her 21st birthday, but did not become a lover of the beverage until years later. Over time, she has taken pleasure in perusing her local wine shops and visiting wineries in the Los Angeles area, even traveling as far as Los Olivos in Santa Barbara County. On any given weekend, you can find her in the kitchen making tangerine mimosas, white sangria, or other wine-fueled cocktails. As a vegetarian, she takes the same approach in preparing her cocktails as she does her food: easy on the ingredients and heavy on the flavor. Over the last year, SoSo Lovely has actively sought to expand her wine palate. Formerly an exclusive lover of white wine, she now frequently enjoys Oregon Pinot Noirs, Beaujolais, and other reds. Her current favorite is Maison Noir Wines’ O.P.P. (Other People’s Pinot Noir) made by winemaker and former sommelier André Mack . She truly believes the tagline of her show: The best wine is the one you like. Delectable: What inspired you and DeeAsia Ali to start the Bad & Boozy Podcast? SoSo Lovely: Bad and Boozy was born from one of our many random conversations. We are both avid podcast listeners and felt like there was a voice that was missing - a voice for both the wine novice and enthusiast, one that sought to educate with humor, and that didn’t take itself to seriously. We both like to talk so we figured, “Why not do a wine podcast?” D: You recently hosted a Bad & Boozy brunch! What’s your go-to breakfast wine and what would you pair with it? SL: My go to wine would be Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine made in the traditional method. It’s light, effervescent, and fruity. I would pair it with my favorite breakfast of the moment: sweet potato hash with Soyrizo and avocado. D: What is your favorite episode of the Bad & Boozy Podcast you’ve ever taped? SL: My favorite episode thus far is Episode 20 with Karen, cohost of The Black Guy Who Tips podcast. She is fairly new to drinking wine and it was a joy being able to share our growing knowledge with her and hear how excited she was to be empowered to try new things and expand her palate. Her commentary was hilarious and refreshing. D: On your podcast, you sometimes discuss beverages other than wine. When you’re not drinking wine, what do you like to have in your glass? SL: My favorite cocktail is a Chambord Margarita. The juiciness of the raspberry liqueur and the tartness of the lime are the perfect pairing. I prefer my Chambord Margaritas with Corzo or Cazadores tequila. D: What's the funniest tasting note you've ever used to describe a wine? SL: Wow. That's a tough question. I think the funniest tasting note I've used has been “stale sour peach rings.” I was reviewing Cupcake’s Riesling and that was the first thing to jump out at me - and not in a good way. D: What’s one wine rule you believe is meant to be broken? SL: I think one wine rule that is meant to be broken is that sweet wine is only for dessert. I know that sweet wine can have a bad reputation, but there are many you can find that are pleasant and complex. Michele Chiarlo’s Nivole Moscato d’Asti is one that comes to mind. Whether you choose Riesling, Lambrusco, or Moscato, you can pair a sweet wine with breakfast, along side a dish of jambalaya, or even with steak, if you like. Your palate is yours and only you know what you like and what tickles your taste buds. D: If DeeAsia Ali were a wine, what would she be? SL: DeeAsia would definitely be a juicy, Cabernet Sauvignon with a hint of spice and serious legs. She's a good girlfriend.
