I looked it up. I am from Germany as well. It’s a certain type of yellowish sandstone deposited many mio years ago in freshwater river estuaries. Sometimes plant material is found in the stone. It has been widely used as building material in Southwest Germany. Not clear to me why the name may be because of its looks or because folks might have found “Schilf” in the stone ones in a while.
