Each month, we gather a playlist of newly released songs and pair them with wines that hit all the right notes. Listen on Spotify Now 1. Sometimes – H.E.R. Last year at the 2019 Grammys, H.E.R. was nominated for five awards and took home two, Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance with Daniel Caesar. This year along with another five nominations, H.E.R. performed her newest single, “Sometimes”. A testament to “everything happens for a reason”, “Sometimes” highlights the feelings of misplacement, worry, and sadness that come when things don’t work out the way you planned; however, it’s an acknowledgement that sometimes these feelings will come up and things won’t go your way, but that’s the way of life. If you have yet to do so, we highly recommend checking out H.E.R.’s Grammy performance to see her shred the guitar that adds an extra umph to the overall sound. Sometimes you just need a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to help you contemplate your life plan, and that’s what you should drink while listening to this song. 2. Casino – Ryan Beatty There’s nothing quite like a dedicated breakup album. Breakup albums tend to contain similar elements of sadness, anger, bitterness, regret, etc. We all know the common themes of these sorts of albums. Sadness makes itself comfortable in all of the songs off Ryan Beatty’s newest album, Dreaming of David; however, Beatty’s album gives off a sense of honest reflection and genuine portrayal of what he was feeling while going through the various breakup stages. “Casino” is soft and smooth with a simple and clear message. This song would be appropriate to listen to while walking down the road while it’s misting, your hands are in your pockets, and you’re accepting the reality of your breakup. Can you see yourself in this music video yet? If you’re ready to contemplate your past relationships, grab a bottle of German Riesling and head out into the mist. 3. Cinnamon – Hayley Williams Punk and alternative kids, get ready because Hayley Williams, frontwoman of Paramore, is releasing her own music in 2020. Petals for Armor is set to release May 2020; however, after releasing a handful of songs on an EP and a collection of music videos, it’s safe to say Williams plans to give fans tastes of her new music up until the full album release. The word “Cinnamon” encapsulates all Williams tries to convey throughout this simply-named song. Lines such as “Home is where I’m feminine / Smells like citrus and cinnamon” and “I’m not lonely babe, I am free / Ah, ooh (Cinnamon, cinnamon)” showcase that not only does her home smell like cinnamon, but home is where she is true to herself and where she is alone but not lonely. The singing of “cinnamon” in the background throughout the progression of the song keeps this concept at the forefront. We think you should take a sip of a Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir that has notes of, you guessed it, cinnamon. 4. Physical – Dua Lipa Hello to our dear old friend, 80s synth pop. Three songs have been released off of Dua Lipa’s coming album, Future Nostalgia, and if these songs are any indication, Dua Lipa will be taking inspiration from multiple decades and styles to complete this album. Equally fitting to blast in your headphones while exercising and/or dance like you’re the star of a breakout musical number, “Physical” will have you sweating by the end of the first verse. We recommend you play Olivia Newton-John’s “Physical” first, then dance your way into Dua Lipa’s song. You definitely should be drinking a glass of Burgundy Chardonnay as you make your way through a decade themed playlist filled with oldies and new goodies that bring the future nostalgia. 5. Headaches – Raveena Her first release of 2020, Raveena brings us the psychedelic and indie rock inspired single “Headaches”. Contrasting Ryan Beatty’s breakup album discussed above, Raveena sings to us all about the ups and downs of the honeymoon phase. The intense feelings that arise during the honeymoon phase combined with the inevitable highs and lows of getting to know someone on a deeper level creates a dizzying effect, which makes this song appropriately titled. There is a consistency to this song that categorizes it as an easy-going, early morning, listen to in the background kind of song. Press play on an early Sunday morning and grab a glass of bubbles (the only appropriate Sunday beverage choice). To match the cover art and music video’s aesthetic, we recommend a Rosé Champagne . 6. Deep End – Holly Humberstone Grab a handful of tissues and get ready to call your sibling after listening to Holly Humberstone’s debut single, “Deep End”. Lyrics such as “I’ll be your medicine if you let me / Give you reason to get out of bed / Sister, I’m trying to hold off the lightning / And help you escape from your head” pen an honest, open, and loving message of wanting to help someone, but not knowing exactly sure how. Throughout this conversational song, Humberstone proves that you don’t necessarily need to know what someone is going through to help. Letting them know that you’ll be there as an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or are willing to just be present with them, is a great place to start.
