Ampeleia Kepos Super Tuscan 2010 Robert Parker, Jr. 92 Decanter World Wine Award '123 Stars Robert Parker, Jr.-The Wine Advocate: Rated as An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. "The 2010 Kepos is striking in this vintage. Dark cherries, plums, spices, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that jump from the glass. Sweet herbal nuances appear later, adding complexity and aromatic lift. This is a hugely intriguing wine from Ampeleia that constantly changes in the glass. The Kepos will be fascinating to follow over the next handful of years as it starts to settle down in bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Ampeleia this year. Every time I went back to the wines, I found a new shade of dimension. A gradual conversion to biodynamic farming and an increased use of cement vats are stripping these wines to the bare essentials, and what comes through more often than not these days is pure class." Jun 2012 Decanter World Wine Awards 2012: "A really pleasing all round style with herbs, baked bread, Indian spices, red fruit, mint and liquorice aromas and flavours." Wired For Wine: Masterfully blended, five different grapes display the Maremmo terroir in Tuscany beautifully in this Ampeleia Kepos red. Ampeleia means "vine" in Greek, and Kepos translates, aptly, to "garden". You won't want to tiptoe through this garden though; you'll want to rush in headlong. Start things off with full glasses and fresh summer tomato, garlic and black olive paste crostini. The combination is dizzyingly good. The gorgeous dimension of this wine, coupled with the rich, dark fruit, spice, herbal and tobacco notes make it a fabulous partner for meaty fare. Grilled paillards of beef with a red wine/port sauce is quick and immensely satisfying. Classic Italian would be steaming bowls of tortelli di patate alle salsicce con ragù, potato- and sausage-stuffed pasta in a meat ragu. Our mouths are watering at the idea of these two together... And for a twist, and a lovely nod to the spice in this Tuscan red, we say grill up a big batch of curried lamb patties. Top them with red onion, cucumber and radish mayo, place them on toasted buns and watch the smiles appear. Refill your glasses at least once more to go with a potent Portuguese Azeitao cheese. It's herbal, slightly salty and not for the faint of heart...
