Griffin's Lair Vineyard Syrah
Great nose. The acidity and tannin is a bit aggressive. We'll see where this goes.

Aug 28th, 2017Griffin's Lair pictured here... or the courtyard of the Frick. Delicious wine not pictured. I was surprised how open this was--the wine, not The courtyard--after about an hour. Like a slightly riper St Joseph. Amazingly listed at under 13% abv. Excellent pair with our steaks at Bowery Meat Co.

Decanted. After an hour, totally undrinkable and just awful, similar to acetone. Thankfully I left it in the decanter. At six hours, it started to turn around, finally getting some fruit with menthol notes, with none of the original faults present, and still seemed to be improving with more air. I will revisit tomorrow to see how it evolves.

Jotting these notes the morning after... on the pop this had quite the reductive funk, something I enjoy. After a couple hour decant the tannins settled and a balanced Syrah was cleanly revealed. Game, spice, smoke, blood, plus dark fruits, olive oil... so good.

Oct 20th, 2018Plenty of meat, smoke, and black olive. 12.8%. Syrah as a porch pounder??

Dec 1st, 2017Stunning nose blue fruits and violets. I appreciate low alcohol wines and balanced wines regards the alcohol level. The tannins are so austere and bitter with no mid-palate... The acidity is fresh and lively, but I would be disappointed paying more than $50 on a wine list.
