Night nine on the cruise and back to Chops Grille tonight. Asked for the Special Selection and was surprised to see it was a 2013 and not a 2014 like last night, always happy to try new vintages!

Dark purplish ruby red. Dark and thick nose with notes of dark cocoa, spices and cassis. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and fuller bodied than the 2014. Not as big of a 'fruit bomb' or as blue as the 2014 but more complex with layers of dark berries, black cherries, spices, oak and sweet spices. Needs a bit more time to reach its full potential. Long finish too. Drink till 2030.

Oh yes! The big boy from Caymus! While I have mixed feelings on the Special Select blends since 2010, this one is going to be great! While 2012 was the best regular Caymus ever, the Special Select was not so much so. This 2013 makes up for that. The quintessential Caymus color, velvet across the tongue, and the Rutherford dust tanin and finish.

While it is a great bottle of wine, the 2013 does not compare to the 2012. Bold fruit, tampered down by some proper tannins. And then there is that wonderful velvety Rutherford dust on the long finish.

Blackberry, licorice with a hint of tobacco leaf - awesome with grilled lamb.
